How are points scored for an in hand veteran class? I will be taking my 18year old mare to one July 14th and would just like more of an idea. I presume confirmation will not be at the top of the list

Had a skim through the link, the one it didn't mention that you get at at some shows is bonus points for every year over 16, everyone got spanked last year at a local show but a 30 year old (the rest of us were in teens and a couple early twenties). The horse would have probably won anyway as it was lovely and I was chuffed with our rosette but it is one to bear in mind so double check the schedule to see if they have bonus points at all.

I was super proud of out 4th particularly at 19 and still eventing :) (we sucked at the ridden though :D)

The Show Ring website will be talking more about affiliated VHS classes - although most shows do follow their guidelines (for lack of anything else to follow). However, you cannot legislate for judges who may decide to put them in age order, height order or colour preference ... !!!

Sorry for the delayed response, I've not been online. Thank you I will take a look at the link thank you. The judge is also judging the show hunter pony youngstock, so she not just a veteran judge.

OFG that link was very useful,i posted a thread yesterday about showing veterans and i can now appreciate what the judge will be looking for.

You're welcome.

I did the VHS series with my old boy back in 2009 (we got to the regional finals which was I chuffed to bits with as he often gave away 20 years to the other horses in the class).

Did many a night's research trying to find out what the judges looked for. The VHS site I didn't find to be that helpful in terms of what the judges looked for but they do give plenty of info on the showing series (final at Olympia!)

I found the VHS website unhelpful too.It seems to focus on the shows rather than giving practical advice on showing the veteran in tip top condition and what judges are looking for.

this is the first chance i have had to come on a laptop so i have had a good look at the link now. i think it was helpful, as i now at least have a little bit of information of what the judges will be looking for. we are doing are class at an agricultural show and we are doing in hand. is it correct for her tail to be plaited rather than pulled? (i dont really like pulled tails) should she be lead with reins or a leather chain? also should i be wearing beige jodphurs or beige trousers?
When i do showing with my 2 year old i normally wear a brown hacking jacket, show shirt with shepherd tartan tie (black and white check), beige trousers, brown jodphur boots and lead with a leather chain.

my old girl has sprung ribs, which i was unsure if she would be marked down for, but from what the link says she shouldn't be marked down for it. her sprung ribs affect her in no ways at all and just to make sure i had her vetted when i bought her 5 years ago just to make sure that there would be no future problems with the sprung ribs. The vet also said she was likely to of had them eith from birth or soon after birth.

thank you for your help
any other info would be much appreciated

I loved showing through the VHS always had a ball!

My understanding was that conformation is a big part, but they won't penalise acquired blemishes, scars etc.. Manners and turnout are also important.

Pulled tails are more correct, but I qualified for regionals and very nearly for Olympia (Reserve champion, champion got the ticket) with a plaited tail.

Regarding your bridle, I have used both, but he looked more "workman like" in his double bridle, so we used that in preference in his case. Others used White halters, in hand bridles whaever was most correct.

I wore my riding gear to Show In-hand with the VHS as I did it ridden as well and it saved on the mad clothes change over, although the trousers and jodphur boots would be more correct (and a damn sight easier to run in than breeches and long boots). You should ideally wear trousers that contrast with your horse's legs so the judge can see who's legs are whos more easily! Mine's bay with dark legs so I'd wear beige. With my grey I'd wear navy blue trousers.

You turn your horse out to type and this will affect what you wear as well.

For in-hand I usually wear a lemon shirt, they look less stark then a white shirt. Mustard with blue spotted tie, to match the horse's browband (riding horse) and my scrunchie. With a dark green tweed with brown and mushroom overcheck, with camel coloured boot leg jeans. Brown jodphur boots, brown leather gloves, brown show cane and a navy hat with a flessh harness. (It was just a faff getting changed between classes - so I didn't bother!)

Yours sounds good to me, although I would perhaps swap the tie for something colourful. Don't think I'd want a tie with black in it, with a brown based outfit? In my head it doesn't look right, but then I've probably interpreted it wrong!

thank you
i think i will just plait her tail and if we start getting to more serious vhs shows then i may consider pulling her tail.
i have a bamboo show cane.

am trying to upload more photos, but it won't let me. so this is the best i can do at the minute

will upload one with my tie on aswell lol

Since my mare turned 16 this year, we've started doing the veteran classes and so far, have done well. Since the classes are often right after a ridden class, I just wear my side saddle habit (yes, I can still run in it!) and take off her reins and clip the inhand lead to the bridle I'd been riding in. I just use my long side saddle cane as well.

All the judges I've had, have marked first and foremost, on condition. Then conformation and turnout. I just show her plaited and with a pulled tail as that is how I show her for ridden classes.

ok thank you
what colour browband would you recommend for the black girly above?

i was thinking if you lot thought my tie looked alright i could have a black and white browband and a black and white schrunchie.
