I'd like to do some in-hand veteran showing with my cob this year. She's 24 and im just going to do it for fun. But i was wondering whether anyone had any experience of them? And whether you think she'll be ok (condition/confo wise)?

Also do you think she should have her legs clipped and mane hogged or left natural, well plait?

Here is a piccie, its not great as shes on a slope-

Leave the mane natural and the legs too just make sure she is clean and tidy. She's gorgeous, any judge should be able to see that. Good luck, hope you have fun with her.

Wow she's lovely, and certainly does't look her age!! I say leave her natural, others of course may disagree. It's all down to personal choice. Good luck with her, let us know how she does

Firstly she looks great for her age - I really like her. Does she move freely?

We do fun showing with Cairo - our old clydie which he enjoys. I now show him with his mane in a heavy horse plait and a ribbon on his tail and forelock - basic clydesdale turnout. He has done better since I have done this as I think people now realise what he has.

Yours has a good smattering of clydie by the look of her. I personally would show her natural rather than hogging, clipping and pulling, but I love my hairies. You may get better results showing her as a cob though as this is what a lot of people expect to see.

Be prepared to be beaten by the smart TBs types at local level unless you get a judge who appreciates the hairy types. Not a gripe but a fact of life - just go along and have fun.

Veteran showing is not just about age, it is about looks, conformation and movement, but an older horse that is great for its age should beat a younger horse.

I did very well on my old TB - she looked good and was fantastic for her age in terms of movement. Cairo bless him is often further down the line but does try his best - with a tiny 14 year old on the end of the rope he often gets the cute vote.

Thank you, yes she moves very freely especially for her age, she has no stiffness.

Yes we think shes definitely Clydesdale X TB, shes supposed to be by The Highwayman?! (means nothing to me, lol).

Im thinking of leaving her natural, a lot easier, lol, but i'll see when i've done a class or 2.

Yeh i can imagine they do go for TB types, but im not too bothered its only for a bit fun.

I think she's lovely.

I had a go at a little inhand showing last summer...it's great fun.

I found that in-hand is much better, less 'strict'. Personally I would leave her au natural, and just tidy up her legs.
The judges like to see them moving well, with good condition and no stiffness.
In the ridden classes, they're a bit 'posher', and I noticed its alot of hunters and hacks, and is more marked on turnout.

A friend of mine joined the Veteran Horse Society with her oldie (25) and has been out and about all over the place showing her.

I expect if you google you will find the society.

We have VHS Qualifiers at Our Show This Year, And i Am judging the Classes at county level this year when VHS finally sort my paperwork, what i would say is looks a nice horse, but turnout wise i would either hog or plait, rather than leave a cross breed loose mained, i dont mind to see a native pony turned out as native but think for the show ring and Very cometitive VHS you should be as per type which for yours would generally mean trimmed & Plainted of hogged out and tail pulled.

I think she is lovely and would definately do well!! Why not try the ridden veteran classes as well as the in hand, if you are going to the show, you may aswell stick a saddle in and ride her around the ring, bet you would both enjoy it!!

I have shown my old 30yo, all season in Veteran classes and bless him, he qualified for the regional championships...then came 2nd!!!! Was so chuffed!! Everyone on the "circuit" is great fun and any pony/horse really can win, its all about, how they move, how the look and probably most importantly, zest for life they have!!!

Best of luck and let us know how you get on!

hey there i'm just about to take a 24 yr old on loan who hasn't been ridden much lately so she is stiff, i would love to do showing with her if i can loosen her up enough shes a very pretty part arab!!
