So with picking up my pony tomorrow, I have been looking at veteran insurance, and he is only going to be used for hacking.

Please could I have some recommendations for insurers please.....
(looking to cover for £5,000 (approx) vet fees, not to include tack, and public liability and personal insurance)

Thanks in advance

:)

You may find that some insurers won't provide cover over a certain age, or the premiums go up to ridiculous amounts. I'm afraid I only have public liability insurance as a gold member of the BHS, and I pay my vets bills as and when - I couldn't justify the premiums for my 23yo. Others may have different opinions.

The only advice I can give (and it stems from bitter experience) is don't go anywhere near E&L!

They gave me permission to spend half a day at the vet's for x-rays and when it came to paying up they refused point blank because he'd had a birthday in between the renewal date and the date of treatment.

I cancelled all of my insurance with them after that.

Now that all of my boys are over 20 I make do with BHS cover and don't have vet fee insurance any longer. The premiums would be too high, and there would likely be too many exclusions as two have arthritis and two get laminitis (pity the one that has the first and is prone to the second!) Sad as it is should anything badly go wrong it will be time for the rainbow bridge, but I wouldn't put them through lengthy, potentially painful treatment or surgery at their age.

Knobberpony is 23 and covered for accidental injuries via NFU,laminitis, colic ect aren't covered due to her age.Home insurance and Pony Club cover 3rd party.

My oldie (21) is insured with Petplan and I pay about £19 pm. Basically it covers just vets fees for injuries and PL insurance. Most major conditions are excluded as he has arthritis, has been prone to colic in the past and anythiing wind-related is excluded too.

My oldie is 24 and still insured with Pet Plan for public liability and vets fees...although he has arthritis related exclusions so have been thinking for some time now weather it really is worth it as I too like the above poster would call it a day if he needed anything major - I wouldn't put Jim through colic surgery for example.

No idea about if they do veteran but big shout out for 'the rural' insurance. I got it from HHO compare and cannot stress how amazing they were when I lost my horse in a freak storm. They didn't even write/speak to me, money was in bank in days and then I got a really sincere email expressing their regret at the tragedy.

Certainly worth giving them a try.

My 20 year old cob is insured with Petplan for full vets fee's up to £5000. As long as you insure with them before the horse's 20th birthday, they will provide full illness cover up to their 25th birthday. You need to insure them on the normal cover and not the veteran insurance though.

I have just had one claim paid (direct to vet :)) and about to put in a second claim.

I pay about £38 per month.
