My NFU renewal is due and it has jumped up enormeously in cost if I stay on standard cover so I have enquired about veteran insurance, which only covers anything resulting from an accident, assuming that things like colic and arthritis are excluded.

I am unsure whether to go this route or whether I may regret it. Any thoughts?

My girl is now 17, a thoroughbred type, she has been in good health apart from muscular issues (tying up) which are excluded anyway.

Thanks

I had nfu veteran, but didn't cover my horse when I put her down. It was really just to have peace of mind if he got loose and started hunting down and breaking cars, houses etc!

I have petplan for my mare who is 18 and retired (or was when I took the policy out) If she stays sound in the next few weeks when I'm riding her I will have to change her 'use' and up the premiums. But at the moment, she is covered for everything for £5k vets fees until she is 25. The premiums are only £14 a month whilst she's retired and so far they have paid out for her cushings and lainitis treatments which obviously will be excluded next year.

I stopped insuring as it was going probably work out cheaper to pay up front(and he was excluded on a couple of things). I just did BHS Gold for liability etc. TBH if it was a minor ailment illness I would have paid out of pocket but anything serious ie colic I would have pts(horse was arthritic anyway).

Petplan aren't the only company that will cover older horses these days - KBIS, SEIB and Shearwater do too. Might be worth shopping around?

I nearly cancelled mine for my 21yo pony last year when it went up to £400, but glad I didn't as I've just claimed nearly £3K for a ligament injury - the first time I've claimed in 17 years. Personally, I'll be keeping him on full cover as long as I can because I can't afford not to, but if I had emergency funds available, I probably wouldn't.

I took my veteran off insurance about 1.5 years ago, 2 months later he for kicked in the face which cost me £1k  I think his annual insurance was only about £250, so was not a good move

But it might be a good move in the longer term. About 8 years ago I had a £1k bill for my mare for an eye injury but over the last 15 years I recently worked out I would have paid more than £14k in insurance!!! I am a gold BHS member for public liability and save each month towards emergencies. I stopped insuring after a bad experience with my TB who got cancer and worked out it wasn't worth it. Current horse is 21 so I don't think I would put her through a big op.
