Hi
I would like to get my mare insured not for illness just for death so that i can afford a new pony in time for my daughter. She has cushings and melanomas will this effect insurance or not i will expect she will eventually be put down because of the melanomas I was looking at petplan and they ask about any illness she has had or has.

I suspect you might find it impossible to get. I have always insured for death and disposal only - not vets fees. But this year my older lad has turned 18 and I can't find a single provider who will renew on his old terms. They all insist on both a lower value - so low it is pointless - and including vets fees which puts the renewal cost too high. And he is completely healthy, hasn't seen a vet other than for routines in the last 6 or so years. You might be better saving your money yourself.

Hi - Petplan will only insure your veteran for death if she dies of an injury. I very much doubt that they will pay out for melanomas, plus Petplan require a full vet's history for the lifetime of the horse, when you submit a claim (at least they did when I spoke to them last week), so they would pick up on the melanomas anyway had she been treated for them in the past.
My recommendation would be to join the BHS to get the liability insurance and don't bother insuring your mare other than that. Save the money that you would spend on the premiums towards your next horse.

This.

If your horse goes under the veteran plan, they will only cover death from accidental injury. If they did insure for illness cover to they would certainly exlcude melanomas and cushings as these are chronic conditions.

I would be very suprised if you could find someone to insure your horse without excluding melanomas or Cushings TBH

I agree with the others, and most veteran policies only pay out for accidents, and don't cover disposal costs otherwise, plus the value you could insure at would only really be meat value (sorry).

You'd be better getting third party liability and saving the insurance money each month.
