Veteran Ridden Horses/Ponies

I use to know a cbXtb being ridden till she about 28 (she was retired but not becaus of old age problems) She was full up 16.2hh, had to done dressage to a high level and looked about 12! She really was amazing for her age and i'm sure she would have excelled at vhs classes. I'll try and dig a few photos out of her.

My old mare that I sold to my best friend for a meesly £400 was 24 when she went to her new home. For 5 years I had her, we did little shows, lots of jumping, fun lessons, fast and long hacks and plenty of other very fast things lol for her age. She was still in work until she was 26+ and then was just used as a compainion pony, think she is still alive, and am hoping to go and see her this year

She was called Nutty, and she was very much so! Lol! She was almost as crazy as my boy now lol!

My oldie is 31! He gets hacked out 4-5 times a week for up to 2 hours . He is fit as a fiddle, he has showed no sign of slowing down and is still a right handful

Apart from being a bit grey on his face and neck now you would never say he was 31, our vet put him at about 16 last year which was a huge compliment

( and yes he is 31, ive had him 26 years

It's great to hear all these oldies going on, i think the insurance companies should re-evaluate their policies, a veteran is definatly not over 15/16 anymore! lol

I'd be interested at how long people's heavies have gone on for, mags is nearly 20 and i've been told to not really expect him to go on past 25. He's a 17hh 3/4 shire and did nothing untill he was 8 but ever since he's been in hard work march- october every year.

Its lovely to hear that, my old pony is coming back to me this week, I've had him for 16 years and he's 28 now and I am getting a few comments about him being too old to ride, he has aged very well, he was a handful in his day but he has chilled out quite a bit now and is a nice sensible hack, but I feel like I'm being made to feel guilty about riding him again, I am getting the vet to check him when he arrives home, the dentist and the physio so I am not just going to jump straight on him. I know I am doing the right thing, but I just needed to hear it from like minded people in the same situation with older horses to ride.

Thank you.

Yeah, you get him checked out and bring him back on slowly! I don't do any schooling or lunging of any kind just lots of hacking. My vet reckons that is what has kept him going and too many people retire their horses way too young
crazy.gif
He has no signs of arthritis or leg probs. Though the farrier struggles with one of his back legs when being shod
frown.gif
Though he shows no signs of lameness in that leg when being ridden.
The only supplements he gets are TopSpec balancer and cider vinegar.
Let me know how you go with him and good luck !

My oldest pony is 25 and is actively refusing to be retired, if i take one of the younger ponies out without him he stands at the gate and screams at you untill you come and take him too. If you ignore him and go anyway he jumps the gate and follows you so it is safer all round just to take him in the first place

I've put all my lunging stuff into my storage box, no more schooling, yippee !!! just nice chilled out hacks around the country lanes, bliss !! I am going to do some in hand veteran with him next year but that's it. I've just found a lovely loan home for my 11 year old Connemara because he was getting a bit much for me as I've got older but I am happy to have him back too in 10 years or so. Thank you so much for your encouragement. xx

i have got an 18 year old connemara mare i know she is not 25 but she doesnt act her age she is like a five year old that hasnt been out of the stable for a month mainly when it comes to jumping lol. she is quite good out for a hack though she is quite strong and does get exited on grass but she is great! i would also like to do veteran classes with her but feel she wont do as well with her being 18 and some of them being alot older.

Chex is about 26 and is still in full time work (when I can be bothered

). He's a bit arthritic but still jumps, gallops etc

I went for a nice 3 hour hack on my 27 year old today. Would have gone round again without a problem.

Thank you Peter that's just what I wanted to hear. I am hoping to be doing the same in the next couple of months.
