Hi There...

I am hoping to show my 25yr oldridden and in hand but know next to nothing abt showing.

I want to take him out at local level and if he does well/likes it am hoping to try and qualify for the veteran class at trailblazers as we are already going for dressage faze.
He is a cob x so I am unsure as to what type he should be shown as as he has long mane feather etc all intact and Im not sure id want to take it all off if not completely necessary.
For dressage I use a running crest plait is that allowed in showing?

Also I only have a navy show jacket (w gold piping around collar and gold buttons) is that ok or shld i be in Tweed?
I have posted some pics in the album section of my profile...pls if u have the time and can help...it wld b much appreciated.

many thanks in advance

I dont really know much about showing, but if he was mine personally I would pull his mane and plait him for the show ring, and also remove his feathers, but that is my personal preference, im not saying it is correct!
I think a tweed is better but local level you will be fine in a navy jacket.
He is lovely by the way and good luck :)

If you are just doing it for fun turn him out as a M&M he may not be a pure bred but unless you are prepared to trim, pull and plait that is your best option in my view. He does not really fit in with an obvious show type otherwise, he does look very well for 25:)

You should wear tweed, whatever you show him as, only show ponies and hacks are shown in plain jackets.

fundamentally IMO (& wrongly) veteran showing is judged on the best show horse. You have to decide what type of show horse yours is and turn out appropriately. If you want to keep feathers etc then decide he is a traditional type and turn out to the standard.

I do quite a lot of veteran showing with my horse and I've found it doesn't really matter what you wear as long as you look smart. I always wear a tweed but that's because I do a lot of other showing classes but there are people in navy jackets at all levels.

I'd leave him as he is now and take him to a few classes and see what the judges say - i've found judges in veteran classes are very friendly and if you ask for their advice they're willing to give it.

The most important thing to do is enjoy it - its a great achievment to have a horse in the condition to compete at 25 - good luck!

Thank you all for your responses and advice. I have since been able to clarify his exact breeding...(his passport states unknown). He is welsh DxCob. So i had a check on welsh society website. Says plating optional for part breds. But seems most plait trim and pull. However im gonna go with my gut and most of u! And show him traditionally and spk to judges. If any one has anything to add...tips etc feel free its most welcome!! :)
