Hello - also posted this in other forum but still - my elderly TBxhanoverian mare is looking a little bit elderly this year and has lost some sparkle (teeth, general check up by vet and back all done recently so no problems like that, she is just getting on a bit) and though she is still keen to have a good gallop in the field and hack out, i was wondering about adding some vitamin and yeast supplements in her feed. She's lost a bit of weight recently. At the moment she just gets molassed chaff, old faithfuls' (changes to pasture mix in summer), speedi-beet and barley, and also fresh garlic and oil.

Any recommendations for good veteran vitamin and mineral/yeast supplements which are cost effective? thank you :-)!
 
My veteran ned is 23-ish and does just fine on wet speedibeet, Mollichaff Veteran chaff and a sniff of D&H Pasture mix. Mollichaff Veteran Chaff smells so nice I wouldn't mind eating it myself! Extremely palatable and packed full of herbs, nettles, mint, antioxidants and very lightly molassed. He has succulents all through the winter too and ad lib haylage. I was adding D&H Vits & Mins to make sure he was getting all the trace stuff he needed but, no disrespect to D&H, it smells, looks and TASTES like dust off the floor. Yes, I did try it! Sunny pulls faces when it's in his tea so I think he shares my view. So I'm looking around for a non-fattening supplement and have just sent off for a free sample of Bailey's LoCal.

If you really want to spoil your girl, splash out on Blue Chip Original. It's amazing stuff and will put a mirror shine on your girl's coat. If you don't want to go that mad, you might try Yea Sac, which aids hind gut digestion which is often getting a little sluggish on older horses. It helps the horse get the maximum nutrition out of the food he is eating. It is also a VERY mild appetite stimulant and that can be helpful too.

I have tried the Equimins Veteran Supplement on my boy which is an all round general purpose supp for older horses, about £16-18 a tub I think but it requires 2 big scoops a day in the feed so maybe not good for fussy horses.
But I agree with boxoffrogs- i liked the original blue chip best- fed it over last winter as it was his first time wintering out 24/7 and he looked great!

Bless her, we did think she was 22, but dentist who came the other day reckons nearer 28, which is not bad for TB type, especially as she was competing and loving it all last summer! will tone it down a bit this year i think, and see how she goes... thank you for your help!
