Hello!!

Just wondering about veteran supplements, what do you people feed and why? Do you feed one anyway at a certain age, or just to address age related issues like mobility or digestion? I'm curious because my mare is 20 and doing very well, I will obviously ask my vet but I wanted to hear what other people advise because quite honestly I know very few people who have older horses!

Thankyou.:)

I feed a veteran supplement from around 16 onwards.

With my current oldie my main problem is getting enough fibre into her which she can digest as she struggles to hold weight. I do not like keeping weight on her by letting her have lots of sugar and starch but resort to a conditioning cube and letting her have really rich grass sometimes. I find her hooves are less good when I do that though and she will be slightly footy even though she is underweight.

Her mother never struggled with weight as she got older but I do think each oldie is different.

I will be interested in other replies to this.

My 25 year old loved his Hilton Herbs Veteran.,They do a good range for all ages.Allen&Page Fast Fibre soaked as his teeth were not great and Simple Systems grass nuts soaked to maintain weight and condition.

My 18 year old Welsh D is in full work, and competing a couple of times a month in the summer (jumping mainly). She's a very good doer so just has minimal speedibeet, Equimins Advance Complete so she has all her vits, and a scoop of Flexijoint, just to aid her joints (though she's not shown any real problems and is 'low mileage'.

My sis' 23 NF pony is ridden most weekends and also does shows throughout summer. Her teeth are on the way out so she needs a little extra help forage-wise in the winter. She currently had 200g Speedibeet and 200g A&P Veteran Vitality (I don't know what they put in that stuff but she's going crazy for it!) Nothing else as she doesn't do as much work as Saf. She looks very well on it :D
