Hi

Any advice, greatly received.

When showing a veteran in hand, at local or county level, unaffiliated & affiliated, do you show them in a in hand bridle and snaffle bit, or do you use a hunter style bridle with a pelham an 2 reins taken over head, or also a double ?

This is how I showed my TB X as a Veteran

He won the 2 in hand classes we entered, champion of his ring then overall reserve supreme champion

Any horse old enough to be broken and ridden away should have a normal bridle with reins over head :-)

Great thanks for all the advice

Did go watch one yesterday to, so could get the drift of it, all of them had hunter bridles with either a pelham or hanging cheek bit, notice most are in joddys, and full riding hat too, is that the norm ?
I usually wear a browny type trouser, blue shirt, blue tie, black short boots, and tweed waistcoat, with tweed flat cap, brown leather gloves & show cane.
My PB doesnt suit a blingy brow or fancy brow, he has a v pretty face, so kind of draws the attention up and away from that, also, is it required to quarter mark, or thats just a personal option/pref.

Thank you all xx

Quite often at bigger shows the in hand veterans are scheduled immediately before the ridden, so yes there may be riders not having time to change between classes :)

In VHS qualifiers a lip strap has been known to make the difference between and olympia ticket and not, when judged on turnout!

as in you need one??!

My girl qualified VHS regionals at the weekend, both in hand and ridden. SO excited!!
I wont post pictures here as do not want to hijack thread! :-) xx

Lip straps are correct turn out and if I was doing anything turn out based I would use one.

They can sometimes make a small or delicate head look a little over cluttered though and people will leave them off for that reason.

If using one try to get a slim one that fits - I have two different ones, one which I used on my riding horse who had a biggish head (though beautiful) and another slimmer shorter one for a horse with a more ponyish head.

No problem and without thread hijacking well done on your wins. Used to do a lot of veteran classes in the past and always had great fun.

Excellent Silvershadow,
Very pleased for you, never mind hijacking the thread get those picys on, you should be proud and show it off.
Where did you go ? What was it like etc ?

ok:-)

Here is Gem, 25 now. This was our first VHS class at Bakewell Showground and she won In-hand (blimey you have to do a lot of running in those classes!!) and 2nd in the ridden (first place was an 18 year old and there was about 10 in class) so ABSOLUTLEY delighted with her!!

It was the first time she has been to a show and trotted! Usually she reverts to wanting to go showjumping and wants to go everywhere in canter!

next stop a regional qualifier..... just trying to hunt one down and find out how the system all works! Exciting stuff :-) xx

WOW

She really does look great, you should be so proud indeed.

Which area Q did you attend, am quite up to speed on how it all works the 3 tier system, well how its supposed to work anyway lol.

You did in full riding gear and riding hat, is that the norm at in hand veteran shows ? Just for my info as I am going to do an area & hopefully regional one too with my 18yr old boy :-))

Thanks Taffie! She has literally now done every discipline!

Perfect, so I can pick your brains!! I qualified at this show, planning to do Derby County next, cant figure out if that's a regional or the same as what I just did! Will go anyway as she loves getting out and about!

I have NO IDEA what to wear, so just wore what I used to SJ in! The ridden class started 5 mins after this finished so I needed to be ready to ride.

What SHOULD I wear in an in-hand? Do I need to go shopping?!! xx

If you click on show dates, then the month you want, those shows are area qualifiers, on main page click on regional finals and direct route, brings up about 10 shows, they are the Regional Qualifiers xxx

Wow, she looks fabulous and how white.

A few little tips on your turnout if you want but please feel free to ignore. I have never managed to get a tail that white so think have a lot to learn from you.

You could do with getting a smaller numnah or a white one that doesn't show or even no numnah if horse does not mind and you could look at using a white girth so it doesn't cut her shape up. Also it is more correct to wear a collar and tie rather than a stock.

In hand I would suggest if you have time to change for the ridden after, dark coloured trousers so that they don't blend in with her legs - sort of brownish cord colour type and short boots. I used to if doing in hand then ridden wear my trousers over my jods though that would make for a tight fit! Generally used to get ones from a charity shop.

Good luck at Derby.

Thanks Humblepie!! :-D

I discovered Lynn someone's white horse shampoo and gave that a whorl! It was amazing. Always used human shampoo up till then, but im now a convert!

One bad thing that happened- bought a black hood to keep her clean the night before... didn't realise the dye would stain her! So poor girl needed another bath and im SURE I can still spot the staining!! Hood is being washed on a hot cycle before being used again!!

Agree on numnah! I only have saddle cloths (brightly coloured ones!) so dashed to shop and bought the first I saw... I have a white one, but it has a sheepskin underside, is that ok, or best to go with hardly anything showing? (Id rather use one than just the saddle)

White girth- added to shopping list!
Dark trousers- shopping list!
Short boots, I take it not jodhpur ones as they are for juniors?

The white numnah sounds fine, it is just to try to show as much of the horse as possible.

Re the short boots, I used to just wear jodphur type boots, the ones you would normally have gaiters with as the trousers cover up most of them. It is just much easier to run in them.

Humblepie, thanks for clarifying numnah, ill pop it under saddle and see how much shows, maybe I should have bought a size smaller for the other brown one I got....?!

what are peoples views on the canary johds? everyone seemed to have them at weekend, I think id prefer to ride in lighter cream ones, especially on a grey?

Yea Barleyfields is deff listed as a Regional Qualifier, so thats your next one after getting the purple Area Qualifier card at your recent show.

So are we all in agreement that even though we are showing Veterans in hand, still a Double bridle or Hunter Bridle with a Pelham & 2 reins taken over the head ? Just so I know for my Area Qualifier.
