Veterans

Yea Barleyfields is deff listed as a Regional Qualifier, so thats your next one after getting the purple Area Qualifier card at your recent show.

So are we all in agreement that even though we are showing Veterans in hand, still a Double bridle or Hunter Bridle with a Pelham & 2 reins taken over the head ? Just so I know for my Area Qualifier.

Thanks Taffie! I think people agreed on using a bit in-hand, so I guess either would be fine. I used the Pelham option as she has sarcoids in her mouth and doubles do not agree with her.

Good luck at the areas, which one will you be doing and when? xx

Yep, double or pelham and reins over head. It is really what suits your horse's looks or if you are doing a ridden class immediately after or before the bridle you would ride in. Used to use on my veteran a rugby pelham with a slip head so looked like a double but only one bit when he was only doing in hand, if doing ridden aswell then a normal pelham.

I used to show my welsh x anglo arab with quite a bit of success with the VHS. I always showed him in a pelham and double reins, both ridden and in hand. I really enjoyed it and my boy Benji certainly did! Here's a couple of pics:

Have lots of fun, look forward to reading your report on here! :)

Wow Benjis Girl! What lovely photos!! xx

Thanks! :) He's my little superstar!! He's fully retired now from all competitions, and is living out his days at home mingling with my others. His last outing was Newark & Notts county show back in 2010 where he was placed down the line due to his broncing fits & very naughty behaviour! Haha! He always knew how to have fun and create havoc as and when it was needed!! :D

ok:-)

Here is Gem, 25 now. This was our first VHS class at Bakewell Showground and she won In-hand (blimey you have to do a lot of running in those classes!!) and 2nd in the ridden (first place was an 18 year old and there was about 10 in class) so ABSOLUTLEY delighted with her!!

It was the first time she has been to a show and trotted! Usually she reverts to wanting to go showjumping and wants to go everywhere in canter!

next stop a regional qualifier..... just trying to hunt one down and find out how the system all works! Exciting stuff :-) xx

Hi

well done on your regional qualifications.

There is a big leap between area and regional and competition is fierce!

There are quite a few turnout items that you need to change before you go to a regional which I am happy to go through with you if you want some help

I would also go an watch one before you enter one so that you can see exactly what the level is and what is expected.

Claire Frost is extremely helpful if you have any questions.

If you want some help PM me

Good luck and above all have fun. I had a ball veteran showing, met some lovely people who are still friends today

Horse looks great for 25 too

Hi Cronkmooar!
Thanks very much for the heads up. As I've said before, this is all very new to me, so any advice and guidance would be gratefully appreciated!!
I will pop you a pm as would love to have any other comments for improvement or tips! or feel free to share them here? xx

Oh no need to change it, I just thought Essex, why is she going all the way to Derby to do VHS that was all.

Mine are Horsham & District RC for area qualifiers, and also Great Bookham for Area & Regional Qualifiers

He is

Welsh x TB, 18 year old.

Love him to bits, but thats him doing a show In hand with an In hand bridle & snaffle, we still got placed thou, so am very happy, but think he was the only Veteran like that, the rest were in Pelhams an 2 reins taken over head, and the handlers all wore riding hats, rather than me in my flat cap lol

Arh, he does look very lovely. I just love the oldies and it is great that there are classes for them so they can still get out and enjoy themselves! He looks like a mini racehorse being paraded in the in hand class!

Ive also seen both caps and riding hats being used. I have just stuck to what I already have, but am realising I need to go shopping..... (shame) x

Just a crying shame he rubbed all his upper part of his tail out thou, its a lot better now mind, but before we moved to the farm it was such a thick tail, one most people would want, took me over a 18 months to get it that way, an about 18 seconds for it to be destroyed lol.

Yea he behaves like a mini race horse at times, and has there tantrums too !!

Benji-Girl

He looks fantastic, absolutely fab

Oh I want a sash on my boy too :D

Thanks, I won that with him back in 2006 at a big VHS show at Arena UK.. We had a fab day, won rosettes, trophy and that beautiful sash.. Got it stored away now as I'd never won one before (or since for that matter)! Lol! Had great fun showing with him! :)

Hmm that explains why I had a fussy judge at a qualifier, having had to shorten my curb chain my centre ring is very off centre so a lip strap really doesn't work (and its really fine without) I decided that VHS was too expensive and turnout fussy - ie would be more expensive to have flesh hat etc so qualified for 2 more local championships instead so we can still have a sense of achievement ;). We were 3rd a couple of weeks ago at the south west pony association champs as a vet and have the veteran horse pony and rider riding club champs this weekend :)
