is anybody doing veterinary at uni? i know there are only 6 that do it in the Uk. If you do what one are you at? also any one taking or taken a masters in equine as that is what i would like to do after a uni degree.
i was just wondering if there is anything you do and what uni you are at and what you think of it and the course...thanks in advance!!!

i was talking to an irish girl today who is doing ver vet course in budapest of all places, she says there are at least hallf a dozen 'brits/irish' in the year above and below her as well as her own and the city is beautiful (that i know), living is cheap (it is) and the course has cost her half the money. something to think about i suppose.

I went to Bristol - although quite a long time ago now.

A beautiful city and a great place to learn. I can tell you the pros and cons of Bristol (as it was then) as I'm sure Star can for London. TBH I would go to the open days and have a look round, and when you apply see which ones offer you an interview. I applied to all the Unis (wasn't Nottingham at this point) but only got interviews at London, Bristol and Edinburgh and then offers of a place at Bristol and Edinburgh only - so its not like you can really pick and choose particularly anyway - its so competitive to get into you are just grateful to get an interview/offer from any of them TBH.
I have a friend who is currently studying in Brisbane - but - he has an Australian passport otherwise I don't think its quite so straight forward to get in in Oz.
Another word of warning if you are considering training abroad is that there is a massive difference in standards in different countries so you would have to pick and research very carefully. Also to practice in this country sometimes the RVC will still require you to sit their exam in this country and I'm sure there would be additional cost involved for that. I know that a vet from Nigeria I worked with a long time ago had to do that anyway.

Hi I have just got onto a masters by research, what degree are you doing? I start my masters in a few weeks, so cant really offer you much advice yet apart from if you can get on a research one and get funded like I have then its a great oppoutunity!

My daughter is going to RVC in 2009. She didn't apply for 2009, but they filled their 2008 allocation and then made offers for deferred places, which she saw as a bonus, as a gap year had a lot of appeal!

So she's spending a year with her horse, maybe affiliating, working in 2 jobs, getting more veterinary work experience, taking her grade 8 violin, and travelling (horseback safari) next summer.

Then the hard work starts!

There's actually 7 vet unis! London (RVC), Bristol, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cambridge and Nottingham.

Like Ann-Jen said, look around at the open days. No disrespect to her point of view, but personally I really disliked Bristol! So you need to have a look to form your own opinion

Basically, do your research and decide based upon how you feel about each place. Hope this helps!

I couldn't face the extra years of study or financial burden of doing a vet degree after my BSc, so I did an Equine Science Masters degree at Aberystwyth.

I really enjoyed it and it opened up more doors for me. I did it 10 years ago (eek!) when there were only a couple of places that did any equine postgraduate study. Look at all of the options carefully, and good luck!

i had the same. i didnt' apply for a deferred entry but got one anyway and it was nice to have a year out with a guarenteed place. i got my 1st horse (supposedly on loan, but i couldn't part with him come September and bought him!), had great fun competing, stayed in the youth orchestra, learnt and performed the Elgar cello concerto - soooo much fun, and worked in an office earning lots of money!

I'm doing a masters in equine science right now alongside competing, I'd definatley recommend it, particularly if you have a supervisor is really into your area of research, as can get so much out of it that way

I dotn really get the purpose of doing an Equine Masters after your degree as a vet. What is it you are hoping to achieve from it? If anything a residency would be far more useful.
Im in final year vet in Dublin. have some friends in many of the British colleges and Budapest. If you dont get the results for Britain - dont rule out Budapest! Everyone over there got turned down from Dublin or the British college.
