Just reading another post got me thinking.....

My mare has COPD and for the past two years has been on a supplement from the vets called Respimin. She has rubber matting/minimal shavings bed, soaked hay, as much turnout as possible. I always keep a tub of ventipulmin in stock incase she appears to flair up and this always clears any problems.

The Respimin and Ventipulmin come to £113, so evened out I probably spend (during winter anyway) perhaps £75 a month on her medication.

Just got me thinking, at some point these powders must be less effective through constant use ? I have noticed a few people mention NAF Respirator and am wondering whether to try this instead ? Although, another way of looking at it is my current system works, my girl is happy and healthy so why change what I am doing ?

Thoughts please and any feedback on Respirator would be gratefully received.

Haven't tried any supplements but i always kept my copd mare out as much as possible, only bringing in for the worst winter nights. event though she is now 28!
if you get good recommendations it might be worth a try, but if all is running smoothly then i would leave it.

It isn't necessarily true that constant use makes a drug less effective. I take daily thyroxine as my thyroid is pretty much non-functioning now. Been taking it for close on 20yrs! Hubby takes daily meds for slightly raised blood pressure. I think the confusion has arisen from antibiotics. If you take antibx for a long time, there is a real danger that the bacteria you are taking the antibx for will develop resistance and this can lead to super-bugs that are resistant to some or all antibx. Take care if you're thinking of dropping prescription meds (POMs) in favour of over-the-counter products. Over the counters are often just mildly therapeutic and many of the extravagent claims made on the tubs are wishful thinking! POMs are backed by years of rigorous testing using ingredients not available outside the pharmaceutical industry.
