had a run in with vets today, long story so won't bore you, but my back goes up straight away when they ask 'is your horse insured?' it is but i don't want to run up a big bill by running through every possible test from hoof to elbow to establish the horse is gravelled. this is why premiums are going through the roof! 50 years experience of livestock and horses i think stands me in good sted and makes me able to make a common sense judgement. what are vet schools producing these days, not common sense that's sure.

Whilst I see your point, I hardly think that it is a bad question is quite standard, it justeans they do have a vaugh idea off what treatmeants they can use, doesn't mean you have to have the tests or anything though.

I have a wonderful vet, experienced, sensible and pragmatic. He often calls me to ask if he can send down a young vet to treat something I have called them for. Mainly he does this to give them experience, not of treating the horse but of being told!

I had one such vet turn up to stitch a horse that had had a bad fall out hunting and had slashed his knee open. They wanted to dope the animal up to the eyeballs before doing anything. I refused as he was a sensible animal and had allowed me to clean it and remove splinters from it without moving.
He stood like a rock throughout all treatment. The only time he moved was to get to his hay.

As you say, so many want to know if the animal is insured and then will rack up the costs. There was a vet in the midlands that got caught doing this and was banned from the Vet Society.

Sorry my post wasn't the clearest, and can't edit it. But I just think that actually it is a fairly common sense question as if it is insured they can run the tests without keeping checking that you have the funds to pay them. There just seems a lot off negative vet posts at the moment.
