remember a bit a go i posted about the only vet we have in our area charging a fortune for call out 7 miles down the road.

Well I got around it by the farmer saying he will pop annie up there to have it done. I just rang up to book and guess what! they dont allow you to take your horse for vaccs!

money grabbing *insert word here*

So annoyed I have no choice in this area but them and £100 plus for vaccs is disgusting.

You ought to change vets. Robbing b'stards!

That is definitely money grabbing. Our vets have one day a month when you can take horses in for vaccinations and routine dental treatment to avoid paying the call out charge. I would be looking for another vet if I were you.

If it's only normal flu/tet jabs, then of course you have a choice, use your feet and walk away. Your local small animals practise should be able to do those with no problems even if as a rule they don't go out to horses (or rather don't specialise in them). Whereabouts are you, I'm sure there will be others in your area with ideas?

Very naughty! I would be wanting to know why and then demanding it is changed, if its the only one in your area and you have no other choice that's crap!

It does sound money grabbing to me... I can't see any reason why they should object to you taking your horse to them- saves a drive for someone afterall. I'd rather let someone come to the practice, pay the vaccination fee and continue to use my practice than upset them and have them move elsewhere. But I guess if they are your only choice where you are, they've got you over a barrel.

Oh that's out of order! Shame you are so limited with the vets you can go to. Guess by the way they are charging they know they have the market sewn up!! Hope you find an alternative soon.

Vets make a fortune out of vaccinations without the call out fee as the mark up is huge: mine are delighted if horses go to the practice - dont even have to unload they will do them in the lorry! I would shop around...

As a Veterinary Surgeon £100 for a vaccination does seem on the expensive side and we would positively encourage clients to turn up for a vaccination, as miles spent in the car are the least profitable esp when travelling to see a single horse owner. One must remember, however, that Veterinary practice is a business designed to make a profit. If a practice feels their business is better served by refusing to do vaccinations in the clinic then that is their right. The market will soon dictate that clients will leave this practice. If you live in or near a town or city there will be several horse practices who will cover you, if you live in a rural area then your choise is more limited but you will still have a choice. If you live in an Island community then you're in for an expensive Christmas!
