I had the vet out for sedating Georgie for his teeth done - £87.

Have had a blazing row with the practice as they charged me £25 waiting time. Now I wouldnt mind paying waiting time if he had actually had to wait for me but he didnt. I had booked the vet and dentist then several other people tagged on as they do (they all phoned the vet and dentist themselves - nothing to do with me) - vet did mine and then had to wait for the dentist to finish my horse before the he could sedate the next so they charged me for the privalege! They want me to pay for him having to wait to see his next client. Errrr hello - not my fault - get the next client to pay his waiting time - its their fault that they didnt make it clear to the vets that they would have to wait for the dentist to finish my horse first!
They have agreed to knock it off my bill now thankfully but I have had one of the partners on the phone ranting and raving at me which I'm not best pleased about.

I think its outrageous that they are trying to charge me for having to wait to see to their next client. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

I've never had that happen however I always examine my vets bill following one incident. My horse was treated for a minor leg injury. The vet came out twice. treated him & then said it should be fine. About a week later the vet arrived on the yard to see someone elses horse. She treated that, saw me & asked how my lad was doing. I told her he was fine & as we were standing by his stable she stepped is & took a quick look & told me that it was clearind up well, which I already knew. Next thing was when I received the bill for his treatment she had included the unsolicited visit on the bill.

I got on the phone to one of the practice partners & said what had happened & told him it was sharp practice & with that they cut it from the bill. I've never seen that vet at our yard since. Damn cheek

I know vets do a vital job and we'd be knackered without them however when they take advantage of our reliance on them and start over-charging and taking the p*** something must be done about it. You can often tell on a livery yard which liveries are vets or are married to vets cos they're always on holiday and its not bl**dy right.

I recived my bill the other day from when Gin cut her face and was quite shocked. The call out was £30 and to peek over the stable door was another £20

that was before he started any work. One of the stitches came out so he came back again and did the same thing. Thats £100 before the work started then I had to pay a fortune in VAT on everything. It cost me £73 to have 9 stitches in, but the nice vet didnt charge me to have them re-done

i've just changed vets as old vet was a nightmare sent someone out to see my lame horse without hoof testers !!!! and tried to charge me for the two call outs when the vet came back with the right equipment somehow i dont think so.

I remember a few years ago i went to pay a bill by cash at my vets, unfortuanately they didnt have the correct change, i said dont worry give it me next time, well a couple of weeks later a vet from the practice was calling out to a yard where i was working at, so i phoned practice and asked for my change to come via this vet, i was not there when he left my change, but he had the cheek to deduct a handling charge for bringing it over!!! i was gobsmaked! No names but he used to be a professional event rider..

oh look, another ranty post about vets fees  god forbid we make some money. cant speak for all vets, but i know i cant even afford a mortgage on my pathetic wage, let alone multiple holidays a year.

Have to say I am feeling very kindly towards my vet at the moment. He came out the other week to donkey with abscess in foot, spent quite a lot of time digging in foot, left me some bute, and also did 2 flu + tet jabs. Got the bill yesterday and hasn't charged me for the donkey at all , just the jabs. Think I shall have to pay it quickly to keep in their good books.

Our vet's fees have just gone up by 10% but I shan't be complaining, the care William received was way over the course of what would be normal, and my bill when I got it was actually less than I feared.. (still enough to buy a nice horse however!)
My wonderful vet visited every time he was driving near us, and often didn't charge for it, just to see how William was doing.
I would have said something in your position too, treating other people's horses is not "waiting" time!
We're lucky, our practice is spot on with their charges, about middle priced and totally professional at all times. It also helps they are nice people to deal with, and over the last 15 years I've come to regard them as friends. Sometimes though that can be difficult, at my husband's birthday party a mare foaled at lunchtime, our vet put his lunch down, went and gave the foal an enema, washed his hands and carried on eating...... and no, he didn't charge for it

I presume you work for a practice-how much does the owner of the practice make per year? Im sure he has no trouble paying his mortgage

yes, im a bit amazed at how a 5 min visit and a wash for my mares face can come to £150 ????

however what made me query the enitire money machine making equine business, my insurance was up for renewall, and as she is now jumping BSJA i wanted to increase her value to £5.5K.
"Ah yes madam we can do that when you have a 5 stage vet cert"....
"er i had her insured with you for 2 years, does it still apply?",
" yes",
" well can i just have insured for vets fees @ 3.5K and theft @ 5.5k? she's up for sale and im a bit nervous of someone trying her then nicking her"
"oh, unfortunaty madam we only sell yearly policies"
" what happens if it takes 6 months to sell her?"
"sorry, cant sell insurance to you"

absolute money grabbing idiots

Worcs!
HA! They have to be the worst vets for charging ever.
Luckily my vet is brill, will drop stuff off for nothing and do me good deals on my own horses (2 bollox for the price of 1

).
Luckily, we have enough horses here to sustain his skiing trips.

I have no proble with paying for any treatment etc I receive - I do however object to paying for a vet having to wait to treat another horse that has nothing to do with me. How would you feel if it was you they were charging?
