Zone Days are an absolute saviour. My vet phones me the evening before, tells me who to expect & what time they will arrive at.

It's interesting to see how many vets have zone/free call out days. None of our local practices have them.

I got charged £40 for a call out fee when the vet's was 1 mile away so £70 for 30 miles is a bargain to me...

Just been given details of a vet that does free call out for routine/pre booked appointments so going to give him a try!

40 mile round trip, sounds a bargain to me, if you wanted me to come and service your boiler at that distance it would be a lot more.

My vet is a 5 min drive away, they charge £25 call out. Then £25 to look at horse (so basically £50).

Ours is about £38 for the call out then whatever they do - jabs examination, reexam etc. It's the same whether you are 2 minutes or over an hour away. They don't do zone days however some big yards in the area can get them to do a regular day without a call out charge. I try to coordinate with other people on the yard though as they split the callout cost.
Even in my old lorry, I could get a lot further than the 7 miles to my current vets on just under £40 worth of diesel and having taken an afternoon off work for it, time is not an issue.
Not done it with my current vet for jabs as always managed to split a call out, but go to them for lameness that may need investigation, nerve block, scans etc . I don't pay a call out, the exam fee is the same if it's with a practise vet (not a consultant), they have perfect facilities for testing and if you need x rays or ultrasound, they have better equipment at the horsepital than portable. Less convenient for the vets though as they organise their non emergency visits in a logical way, it's often going out of their way to go back to base if you go to them.
