Vets fees ..Charity help?

My OH's elderly parents rescued a cairn terrier bitch about 12 mths ago, no-one knows her story as she was found wandering, she is probably over 10 yrs. Up to now she has been a healthy little dog, but I gather this past week she has had several sort of fits, where she has 'passed out'. MIL has seen the vet & so far inconclusive but has already cost £500. They cant afford this amount but if whatever the problem is can be treated presumably by drugs (epilepsy?) & the dog has a longer term future are there any charities that could help. I know of the PDSA but I don't know if they would support through her own vet.
I have suggested they may need to PTS because of the cost, but it took such a long time for them to find this little dog I am reluctant to leave them dogless whilst they are still just about capable of physically looking after one. The family would rather there was no dog but we have to admit MIL has been happier since Heather arrived.
Any suggestions or ideas please... thanks
 
Contact the cinnamon trust. They may know of any funds available. They help the elderly find residential care that will take pets and offer fosters etc
 
Contact the PDSA and find out if your OH's parents are eligible for assistance. If so they will have a list of vets that work with them or they may have a clinic.
 
You can only use another vet and be subsidised by the PDSA if you are in A, In receipt of the correct benefits but (out of the catchment area) i.e your post code does not qualify and you do and B, you are pre registered for (pet aid) befre the illness or treatment began, but the private vets must participate in (PDSA/pet aid) as some dont (as not worth their while)
If they qualify and are in the postcode area and have a PDSA hospital close by then they should use it.
