Can anyone recomend a vet in Surrey that will travel to the Guildford area and who is simpathetic to the needs of "backyard" horses and owners without transport?

ermm debbie watson or pippa duncan - a lot of people dont like her as she is a bit blunt
Eamon Mclauglin - hes nice and understanding hes a free lance though so if your horse needed an operation you would have to go to liphook
or of course liphook
sound equine - i dont really know much about them

thats all i know hope this helps!

All the vets at Shotter and Byers are great. We have no electricity and ours live out 24/7 barring disaster. They turn up and manage in all weathers with no complaints. Sarah is especially nice :) and has been great for us. It is a big practice with some posh clients but they treat us very well too.

I use Dietrich von Schweinitz but Pippa Duncan and Chris from Sound Equine have both been out when covering emergencies and I was impressed with both of them. Have heard lots of good things about Shotter & Byers but never used them.

I second Debbie and Pippa at Rivendell! Their phone number is 01483 811088. I've had Debbie for years - and yes she will tell you how it is but you can really rely on her to be honest with you! And Pippa's great too - she has her own horses and ponies (as has Debbie) and both are very practical!

Agree with Eamon at Liphook - only problem is that you are dealing with a very large practise. If you can get Stuart Duncan he's great too but much in demand!

How about Adam at Southern Hills? Colleague of Dietrich. Phone number 0845 5438447.

Where abouts are you exactly??

I can throughly recommend chris and olivia from sound equine. They come and do our polo ponies and we are near croydon. Chris has always been really practical and explains everything really well and olivia is just lovely and very good at her job.

You see I want a vet that understands the normal behaviour of a horse that does not go anywhere and has not got a lot of experience of loading, clipping, different places etc.

I am glad you said that about Shoters and Byers, misst, as thheir ad in a local paper says how they do racing, showjumping and polo yards and does not mention happy hacking horses .

Id recommend adam and deitrich at southern hills, very knowledgeable. Deitrichs bedside manner is a little abrupt for some but i find him to the point. Adam is more open to the alternative therapy type stuff. Neither mind a muddy field or a scruffy pony...

Thanks giveitago , I know that they are excellent vets, but for investigations they prefer you to take your horse to their clinic.

I'd recommend both Southern Hills and Shotter & Byers, have used both with no problem and very impressed with both. My horse is a field kept 'happy hacker' :)

I've used Southern Hills for years, Dietrich does like to utilize all his toys and gadgets at the clinic as these give the best results and I've always taken my horses in, however, last year we had a mare that was unfit to travel due to nervous issues and physical problems and Dietrich did cart half his clinic to our yard (under a bit of duress) but we got the desired results if not a smile.

If you can bear to work on loading, clipping etc it's worth it in the end, most insurance companies will cover transportation for hire. I know its a nightmare with some horses and you obviously don't want to go there. I've always found Adam and Dietrich to be respectful of the happy hacker, particularly Adam who's a bit of a horsey hippy...

Teasle, they really don't mind what sort of yard you are at. They are very friendly, have a lot of mobile equipment and will even arrange a transporter for your horse if needed to take to Liphook (their usual referal centre). When my youngster was lame it was winter, muddy, no school etc and he did not lunge as he was only a yearling. To make matters worse I was unable to trot him up due to my lameness!!
Sarah "loose schooled" him in a safe corner of the field to assess him and did not complain once. If she can put up with that with a smile then I think anything you throw at her will not bother her!

Mayes & Scrine have looked after us beautifully since we moved to our yard and don't care whether they're looking at a £30k dressage horse or a scruffy pony - each gets the same care and attention. Delighted with them.

Another vote for Adam! Very very nice guy and works very well with other vets when needed.

Chris and Olivia from Sound equine are also very good, but area wise for speed in an emergency you would be better off with Adam.

Gayton Veterinary Group are brilliant, Raymond Heathcote in particular.

I would not touch Shotter and Byers with a barge pole.

Donald Kingsnorth in Chobham is very good :)

He USED to be very good, but concentrates more on small animal practice and when we needed him to come and see to a mare on three legs, he sent a vet with no flipping equine experience, who got lost, and then was scared of the horse when she got there.
That was when I switched to an equine based practise!
