Vets near Burford, Oxfordshire?

Hey, I'm looking for a vet for my horse in the Burford area, Bourton Vale is pretty close but everyone tells me they're really expensive (I know most vets are!) Does anyone have recommendations of another practice that treats horses?

I wonder if the Blue Cross could advise?

Personally I use Bourton Vale and rate them VERY highly, my horse is utterly in love with Holly which makes treating him much easier! They've been fantastic with me!

Other vets locally are Peasebrook, cheaper than Bourton and I do hear lots of good things about them I originally registered with them but when I found out at lunch time on the day that my new horse needs his jags they were VERY unhelpful in regards to getting a vet out so my vacs didn't lapse, despite me not being registered with them Bourton sent someone right away.

I echo this - I am originally from Bucks & am glad I never have to use them again, the way they dealt with my poor mare after she was PTS was shocking. All about money & nothing else.

Don't have any useful suggestions i'm afraid but I'm surprised to hear such bad things about Chiltern Equine, i have only ever heard positives! I personally don't use them i use Wendover Heights but i don't believe they cover as far Burford.
 
I didn't think Bourton Vale were more expensive than others - they would be the ones I'd recommend as if its anything more than routinue vaccinations, I'd rather have horse specialists!!

I totally disagree with this .


I had nothing but respect and care with my first mare . before she was PTS .

I would not think of using any one else especially J and D :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: My lami mare is currently under their care . I have had personal text from the vets right up to midnight last night checking on my mare who might have been colicking , the same 2 weeks ago when she was colicking and even first thing in the morning .

Depends on which vet you have whether you have a re-pore with them I have. Wouldnt use any one else

total cr4p. my mare went in for surgery , they came out to see her within 2 minutes I was told they wanted her up surgery as vet felt bone. They operated on her and saved her leg , the after care was gr8 kept on top of injury so no infection got into the hock even tho the splint bone was shattered in 19 pieces . She came home and went from strength and she was happy when she left with NO signs of mistreatment.

In fact one of my livery horses actually bolted back to its stable when it was supposed to go home
even with a set back of another horse kicking her on her initial injury they were straight out to check her.

I would be careful not to slander any one when you don't know if they read this forum .

Just checked my phone-( 8,30)am a text from the vet to see how my mare is after last night ??
That is caring and vet looking after my mare says she doesn't see my mare as just any horse she sees her as a friend I can text any time D or N and she will text me anytime day or night if i have any concern. :) That's what I call caring for your client

I understand not everyone will like them . Thats all you need to say I wont use them but not go into detail on a public forum.

I personally cant rate them high enough and have used them ever since they opened and even the owner i knew back in the 90's and used her then too .

I'm glad your horse was well cared for, however I know of many cases that weren't as lucky as you. It is very definitely not slander and I am happy to tell anyone (including them) my experiences, please PM me if you wish to know more.

I've used Bourton Vale for the last 10 years and can't rate them highly enough - never found them unexpectedly expensive, and they've always got the root of any horse health problems quickly and efficiently, which is in my mind the most important thing.
 
I used one of the practices listed above, this year, and with disastrous and costly consequences. I wont be drawn into which practice it was, but despite the promises, a careless and lackadaisical approach, set me back a great deal of money, without even an apology.

I refused to settle my account, demonstrating their total incompetence, and to date, they seem to have accepted my stance.

I would advise all those who consider taking on a new practice, that they do their homework, and be quite certain that they get the ground rules straight, from the outset.

I used to use Walker, Glanville and Richards - Hook Norton Vets. They were very good. My only experience of Bourton Vale was when my TB mare was dying of colic, was not impressed with the service at all. I know it was a stressful time but the young vet was suggesting that we take a mare that could not actually stand and try to load her (she did not load willing even when well) and transport her into the Surgery. Err no, besides she was clearly in a massive amount of pain and dying. I then asked for her to be shot, errr no, we don't do that. Ok so I had not warned them that this was what I prefer as it was an emergency. I then witnessed the most horrific lethal injection, the mare galloped as she lay on the ground, thrashed about and bled everywhere. It was horrible. Ok that was not necessarily the vets fault but I felt that the pain was prolonged, I literally had to beg her to put the poor mare out of her misery. The farmer was about to go and get his gun to sort it out for me as he was so appalled. Not saying it is always like that, just my experience.

I agree with above, I have nothing but good things to say about them, they have looked after my 4 horses for the past 5 years and the service has been nothing but fantastic. The two vets I mainly use remember everything about my horses and are always happy for me to text them if I have a problem for question. My lami has been up and down for the past 11 months and I always get asked how he is doing even if I'm phoning up for one of the others.

Everyone will have good and bad things to say about different practices, i recomened going into them and talking with the vets and staff who you will be putting your trust into and going with who you felt most comfidant with.

We use Hook Norton at the farm and find them, for large animals, the best in the business. However, after owning a very naughty and accident prone cat, who has had several treatments, we often found that the cost changed (always more expensive...). We use Bourton Vale at work, had them out today, and I honestly can not fault them. I have had a text tonight checking on the horse in question and they will accomodate our every need. Really rate them, as for price they are the same as Hook Norton.

wonder if you using mine i was using R b 4 he went to new zealand now K... is looking after my mare and also K........ dealt with her colic


she coming out tomorrow to drill a hole for the abscess
 
we use bourton vale and never had an issues normally use holly who is lovely and really understanding, never looks at you like your wasting her time. or adele!!
otherwise there is hook norton.

I will not DISS my vet here or in private PM , I do not wish to know untruths. My vets have a good reputation round here and if you cant take the competition bow out gracefully .

One thing I can truthfully say apart from what I have previously said

CEC are all 100% horse lovers many of whom have their own horses .
95 % of my yard use CEC 95% of my friends use CEC I think that says it all for me.
