Hi all,

I posted last week about my boy going up to have a lameness investigation at Endels on Monday. Well I got a phone call in the afternoon, just as I was leaving the yard with the lorry to pick him up, saying that he was going to require surgery :(

The surgery was done on Wednesday morning. I wasn't a very nice person to be around Tues night/Wed morning due to worrying about him so much but I got a phone call to say that it all went well and he is happily recovering in his stable. They explained what they had found, what they had done (he had his annular ligament cut and they removed some damaged tissue from the site of a small tear in one of him tendons (i think it was the DDFT though may have been the SDTT, the convo was all a bit of a blur. I just wanted to know he was up and okay).

Anyway the vet said he recons he has a 60% chance of coming back in to full work (eventing) and tbh I was kind of hoping for more after paying out a couple thousand pounds, which i've had to fund by selling my wonderful youngster as the insurance won't pay. Some people have said to me that it is common for vets to have a pessamistic view, otherwise they risk getting in to trouble if the horse doesn't come right?

Is this true? Or is there really only a 60% chance of my boy going back to eventing :( He's still at the vets now, hopefully will be back home on Monday where he will be on box rest for 6 weeks and then turned away until the new year. He means the world to me and tbh if he didn't come right he will ive out his days as a happy hacker/companion here with me but I cant help and not feel disapointed that we may never jump again.

Has anyone else's horse had a simular injury? What was your vet's odds of your horse coming back to full work and what was the outcome?

Thanks

Good luck- time will only improve his chances so give him plenty of it.
Endells are excellent- who are you dealing with? But yes, vets do tend to be a little cautious with prognosis

Jan did the lameness investigation and Nigel did the surgery.

I've been really impressed with them, two other vets missed the small tear in his tendon. They have been happy to explain everything with the use of models and have been giving me a phone call every morning since he was admitted on Monday to let me know how he's getting on.

I intend to follow Nigel's reccomendations for bringing him back in to work by the letter. I'm in no rush to get out and compete, doubt i'll be able to afford the entry fees anyway after the bill comes through :P
