Does anyone know roughley how much its costs to keep a horse at the vets?.

My horse is going in of surgery on her fetlock joint next thurdsday and they are taking her the night before ( so weds ) and she will be in for a few days after too.

Can anyone tell me how much this will cost as my insurance policy says they will pay 50% of these and the rest i have to pay for.

Im assuming they charge per night?

My mare had to stay in over night and it was £10 per night. A friends horse also had to stay in and that was £10 per night. Both different vets.

Hope the op goes ok.

Thats not too bad. I almost died when a lady told me today she was charged 14 a night many years ago. i had vision of it being like 20-30 a night

Its costing me a fortune as although she is insured the costs of extra hay and bedding are very heavy on my already empty purse.

Anyone else know how much thet were charged.

I have just been charged £12.34 a night livery and £24.68 nursing care for each night, hope its just the stabling that they only pay half for as he was in for 3 nights!!

Im going to call NFU tomo but its interesting how its divided.

Im hoping that the nursing care will be covered under the vets fees?

God im so worried about my baby girl i keep getting all tearful. Ive told the vet i shall almost be living there with her the whole time and will sob into her summer sheet while shes in theatre.

Hello again! Any treatment, dressings etc will all come under your £5k vets fees, the accomodation costs are seperate and NFU will pay 50%. At Bell and assume Newnham Court will be the same, your livery includes all bedding, hay, feeds and mucking out etc. The spa at Bell is expensive I think is £19 a day plus VAT (!!) but accomodation in the veterinary barns for in-patients is cheaper though can't remember how much but £10-15 rings a bell. Your vet should be able to give you an estimate for the op costs and have a price list for all the other stiff like livery - good luck!

The replies so far have been very cheap. £10 per night is less than I've been paying to the stud farm for overnight stabling for my mare! I lost a filly getting on for two years ago but the vet's "livery" fees then were £39.50 per day.

My vet charged £25 per day and NFU paid up very efficiently. In fact towards the end of my claim - running out of insurance money rather than end of treatment and in an attempt to save as much of it as possible - I paid for one day of stabling and stated that in the letter I sent to them with the vet's invoice. A few days later a cheque for £12.50 arrived stating that they paid 50% of stabing fees. If I didn't know better I'd say they felt a bit upset that I'd paid it LOL!

I will ring them today amymay but i just wanted to get some sleep last night rather than sit in bed worrying about it.

If they pay for the nursing i can handle the stabling costs.

last time i had a horse at the vets 3 days livery was about £90 which i thought was a bit steep

not with nfu but my ins co paid it all

Eeek!!!

They dont divide it up and its £27 a night!!! She will be in for a minimum 3 days poss 4 depending on her recovery. I phoned NFU and they will pay the 50% God thats still another £50 ish quid at least ill have to pay out.

Oh well cant be helped i suppose.
