So we call one vet that was scared to take a temperature, had to use a calculater to work out an easy dose [I did it in my head well before he did it on his phone] Asked us how to spell iron grey for an identity form.
Next day my other horse was ill and this vet was still on call so we used an more expensive vet, she treated him , but a week later he was not much better and was recalled. She said more antibiotics as before , 1 sachet twice a day,I said you said only 1 sachet once a day before and only gave us 5 sachets, she was surprised by this, she also said that he would probably always have a swollen leg now, she gave a steroid injection and said we have done everything we can now. His leg never really improved much but I thought it was always going to have some swelling now.Today he was worse and we call ed for advice, we heard nothing back and phoned tonight but they were closed .His leg has now burst open.I am fuming.I have a bill for £180 for the incompitent vet. A bill for £350 for the vet that never gave the correct dose of antibiotics and a horse in pain.
I have just sent a snotty email

Hmmm - we have a vet at our practise that is frightened of horses! - When she came out to do the identity marking for my mare's passport she actually asked me "what colour do you call this?" My mare is a very typical chestnut! However having said that when I had a pony who had a really nasty fall, through wire and down a bank she was very good.

Could you ask your practise to send out a vet who deals with equines and explain their previous incompetence which might just let you off the bill?

I guess you don't always have a choice, but I know some vets specialise. When I flew a bird of prey, I was lucky enough to have a vet who specialised in raptors only a short drive away, I would not have trusted a small animals vet with my hawk.

We now have a couple of vets who are equine / large animal specialists and they are very good.

I guess vets can't know everything about everything, but when I worked in computers, you did not send out a printer engineer for a software fault!

Blimey CH I dont blame you at all

- that's an awful expensive mistake for you on behalf of the vets. I really do hope you get to the bottom of it. Keep us posted.

I know the feeling, my little mare was diagnosed with Cushins and was on pergoloide for 3 years, with me asking the vets all this time were they sure it was Cushins because it was not progressing/worsening in any way, them confirming yes it was - tuns out nope she wasn't, just lamanitic little ponio! You can imagine my hubby's reaction OMG! Fireworks!!!

So, you were 100% in the right to send your e-mail. Good Luck

Oh, btw - was lovely to meet you at Weston Lawns on Sunday

I had an awful vet once who I called out to look at a bad cut on my TBs coronet band. I fully admit my horse is a wimp and didn't want the cut touched but still... the vet attempted once, the horse raised his leg and the vet went - 'ah I see'. Trotted him up, he was clearly lame. Vet said he was sound!!! I asked for antibiotics/bute as I knew I'd have to call them out for an infected leg otherwise. He told me if I insisted, handed me five sachets of antibiotics and two sachets of bute?!? No injection or anything. Wasn't best pleased to say the least.
So when he got colic later that month and I called and was told it would be that particular vet I declined and switched practices. Never been more pleased!
