The only thing i have done is when my boy got a slice on his heel, the vet told me not to turn out for a week (due to muddy field) but after a day i turned out with it fully covered in gamgee, plastic bagged & further dressing to stop it from getting dirty & it worked fine. when the vet came back i told him that i turned him out & what i had been doing & he said it was fine. i suppose it just covers them, in my case when i told him when turned out he would just stand and eat in the field... does the vet know i am telling the truth or just lying becuse i want my horse to go out?
Vets are human beings. They have a lot of training but - like everyone else - they are not always right. You should feel free to seek a second opinion if you want to.
I agree with Shay, vets are after all human so they do (like everyone else) make mistakes, so if you are concerned about the advise given you should discuss it with the treating vet first, who should be approachable. If you are still not happy, you are entitled to a second opinion.
If you disregard the advise given without the treating vets knowledge he/she won't have the full picture and might not be able to reasses the situation correctly.
