So, i've pretty much had the morning from hell! Cut a long story short, my younger horse was looking very distressed, sweaty etc so called my vet out as I was pretty much 100% he was in the early stages of colic.

Anyway, I was completely shocked to find out the actual cost of call out fees etc.
How much does everyone else pay for call out? And is this dependant on mileage or just a set fee?
And finally, do insurance policies tend to cover call out charges?

Help and information greatly appreciated :)

We pay around £25-30 for a call out it would not be worth claiming of your insurance for a call out as you will still have to pay your excess which will probably be more. Also im not sure if you would be covered if he got colic again if you did claim?

I just didn't realise how expensive it was, call out was £50 then got the examination and meds on top of that.

First time i've had to have the vet out and didn't realise it was so expensive!

i know! but they do differ from place to place, my mum used Aylesbury Vale House for ages until i started ringing around and found a much cheaper (and better) vets in leighton buzzard.

my mate gave me a number for i think Vale house again in the summer when i was visiting and had a sick pup and their sunday out of hours was £140 + whatever else they wanted to charge!!! i was freaking gobsmacked so went to another for £30.

i miss my old vet, so much more down to earth than this one up here. dont think much of them really.

Visit £22 Examination £30 Total £52!! Mind, my small animal vet charges about the same for you to take the animal to them!

And I think it is scandalous that vet visits and most meds are VAT-able. Really a vet is not a luxury item, though I know a horse is a luxury item but come on!
