What are peoples experiences with vetting horses before importing / buying? Have you asked for copies of xrays to be sent to your own vet? Have you searched online for an Independent vet or trusted the seller to arrange? Have you felt secure in the job that an internation vet has performed?

Im thinking about importing a PRE from spain, but after losing my gorgeous warmblood last month to OCD, im very nervous about purchasing any horse without having the full works looked into! Yes I do realize that things could develop later that hasnt shown up, but I still feel a bit raw.

On previous vettings Id only asked for a 5 star, but will def ask for xrays this time, any advise on how far to run with that?

Mine came with a Spanish vetting in spanish inc x-rays although difficult to prove the x-rays are actually of the horse I was buying! My vet didn't think much of the x-rays my Andy came with to be honest but he passed two 5 stage vettings by 2 different UK vets no probs when back in the UK :)

Hi, I have vetted in germany from here in spain, did full whack, the german vet said it was passable but sent the x-rays to my vet here, and he failed it on the x-rays as it looked like it might get OCD.
Make sure you vet well if you are getting a PRE. X-rays are a must and go to a reputable stud.
There are a few of us HHO's over here in spain so if you want names and addresses of vets we can find them for you, i the local directory, I am sure. I'm afraid my vet is up in Germany at the moment but I am sure he can recommend others if you need help.
Try to go with a stud you know and have references for.
Good luck.

Yeah I did wonder about the whole proving it is the actual horse etc, but put that down to my own paranoia lol. I did speak to my vet about looking over the xrays, but they said they dont normally recommend that, due to the xrays not always being good quality or needing extra view points. They suggested asking the stud to send the horse to them for the vetting, to which im not sure I have the guts to ask!

Mik: Im in no hurry so plenty of time to find a vet etc, Ive met the breeder and seen plenty of video so going out to view and ride at the end of the month.

Sorry my connection is playing up.
Just be very careful. The x-rays we had sent by e mail were really clear and good, so no problems for me. Make sure you do the feet as well.

Yeah quality was not great but every single angle and joint was covered inc feet with shoes on... proving they belong to the particular horse is a toughie I think although my horses microchip number was on them.
