Hi

I am looking to buy my first horse - a seven year old OTTB for 3k. She was bought from a dealer and sold to a lady who is giving her up due to a lack of time. She's not had any clinical history from what I have been told. Before people say that I shouldn't buy an ottb as my first horse - I have worked on race yards, and have loaned and part loaned for many years. It's only now that I have the financial means to buy my own.

Could anyone point me in the right direction - is it worth getting a 5 stage vetting and x-rays? I know with ex racers there are increased risks of kissing spine etc. When I rode her, she threw her head a bit and was a bit unbalanced, but was fine with the owner. Also noticed that she was resting her back legs a little bit after being worked, but I'm not sure if it was me being paranoid.

Also, who would be the best for insurance? I have had a look with Agria, but I'm a bit confused and overwhelmed with the options.

Thanks for all your help.

Definitely 5 stage vetting, x rays and insure with NFU. They aren’t the cheapest but they’re reliable. Remember it’s not the cost of buying the horse but the cost of keeping it that’s expensive and ongoing especially with OTTBs.
