Vetting my new horse

Have finally found a suitable horse, hurrah! Question is, do I do a 2 stage or 5 stage vetting? He is an 8yo TB that has raced twice, I will just be doing general RC activities - I am not aiming for the 2016 Olympic team or anything! He looks to me to be in good condition and rides very well, I didn't get any warning signs to be worried about. Opinions gratefully received..
 
Price in difference tends to be minimal but level of thoroughness is massively different. I'd go with a 5 unless horse is cheap. We never bothered with really cheap ones, just watched them trotted up and how fast they recover from hard work. Good luck with new horse.
 
Dito i would go for the 5 star vetting too, with that the horse would have blood put aside just incase it needed testing at a later date, its always better to safe and not sorry;)
 
Five stage vetting - if it fails vet may say he passed stage 2 anyway. Five stage vetting gets allows you to have 'loss of use' for insurance purposes too.
 
My vet quoted me today for a two stage vetting which is very basic check over legs limbs etc £90 + vat and if I want dope test £20+vat

Full 5 stage vetting £175+VAT which is the works etc

I am looking tom and will only go for a 2 stage + blood test as the horse isnt valuable and cant remember if its £4k or £5k then its more important for insurance etc. NFU did explain it to me and cant remember as I wasnt in this price range!

For peace of mind I am going 2 stage unless there is something else that concerns me. Good luck
 
Thanks for the opinions. I was going to go for the 2 stage as he is a cheap horse and will mainly be a happy hacker, so it seemed suffiecient after I chatted with my vet. Fingers crossed!
 
A 2 stage will be more than a basic check over. It will include eyes/heart, at rest only/a full hands on check of body and limbs /trot up and flexion tests on all limbs is usually carried out.
If anything shows of concern, if the purchaser is present, further tests could then be carried out.
Most vets now require a disclaimer form to be filled in if they are only doing a 2 stage.
Which to have? I feel it depends on value and future use .

Yes do this as I did today and the lady was more less telling me I only needed a 2 stage unless there was a problem etc(although she left it up to me to decide) it does have something to do with value of horse and loss of use???? etc

You don't need to pay extra for a blood test. The vet will take a blood sample whether it's a 2 or 5 stage examination. They don't test the blood, they just store it in the fridge and if there's a problem post-sale, that's when you request it to be tested. The test costs £80-£100 and will reveal if the horse was under the influence of painkillers when it was vetted. They keep the blood for up to 6 months

oh right I only rang vet yesterday and didnt tell me that bit..um thought it was tested..but now not. Mind you all 3 of the horses with a lady I met recently that she had viewed were doped! It cost her a small fortune so thats why££!! Scary isnt it.

Personally I would make sure you request a blood sample be taken, not all vets do it as a matter of course. I've only ever had horses 2 stage vetted and if anything has occurred later on, you can bet it wasn't related to anything that came up in the vetting! Good luck with yours, vetting is a stressful time
