Hi Guys - would appreciate your thoughts - had a horse vetted and it reveals two skin nodules - on ein the groin which is almost certainly a sarcoid. Would that deter you from buying if everything else seemed fine (bearing in mind that my insurance won't cover me for it)?

If the horse were 'the one' in the sense that I just had that gut feeling that he/she would be my horse of a lifetime then no it would not deter me at all

wouldn't touch it, they always come back and spread, talking from someone who has had experience!! Good luck though whatever you decide

I wouldn't buy it, after seeing what problems a friend had with a horse with a sarcoid, having said that another friend of mine brought a horse with a small sarcoid (that I decided not to buy for that reason) and it just fell off, i think it is still sarcoid free. Good luck, only you can decide.

My horse has had them and depending on where it was i wouldn't let it put me off if it was the right horse. There are plenty of treatments you can use now without it costing the earth.

I bought a horse with sarcoids but I knew it well so it was a calculated risk because the horse was 100% known quantity and perfect in every other respect. I've had them treated successfully pm me if you like.
You may have trouble with insurance which is something to consider as treatment can be costly.
No one can predict how sarcoids will progress, ask your vet, read the articles and papers by Dr Knottenbelt at Liverpool and then make an informed decision.

No I wouldn't as my new on has one on his face, and it seems to be getting smaller by itself.
Granted if it is still here when/if he is up for sale it may affect his saleability but he is a lovely horse and couldn't pass him up just because of that.

i bought one with 3 sarcoids in groin region as he was right in every other way had them treated and still free of them 2 1/2 years later. insurance wont cover skin lesions but it was a calculated risk that i decided was worth it on the basis that i could at least see the problem and something else can go wrong tomorrow any way as there is no such thing as a risk free horse! but it is a risk and can go wrong so you have to be prepared for that.

when you say groin , do you by any chance mean at the castration site? this is pretty common if so , may horse has them & passed his vetting & they haven't been a problem

Well the vet said that she wouldn't fail a horse with sarcoids, because she's seen horses with them for whom it hasn't been a problem. But she also added that it is a big gamble - he could be one that does have complications (which would probably be just my luck frankly). I'd have an exemption on his insurance which could of course mean it costs me a helluva lot of money at some stage, not to mention the heartache, and then there's the whole thing of spednign quite a lot of money on a horse to know that it has a problem at the outset. I mean, if it was a capped hock well - what the hell- might be ugly but in the whole scheme of things will never bother me. But ths is different and could well bother me and him an awful lot couldn't it? Think I've probably answered my own questoin really. Thanks for listening all.

My hubbys horse had two small sarcoids treated when she was only 7 months old. She stayed free of them until she was 8 then had another treated and is so far free of them at 11yrs. They probably will come back, though i hope they dont! To be honest its cost a small fortune and her insurance company will never cover her for them. I probably wouldnt go out and buy the problem seeing how they bother Bramble. Only you can choose though.

i had my horse vetted and they missed a sarcoid. i wouldn't have bought him if i'd known about it. he's not insured for them now, it cost me a lot to get it treated and it still hasn't gone yet and he might grow more.

Think I'm going to have to walk away from him which is very sad. I know that many have sarcoids without a problem, but it would be just my luck for his to be very complicated, and as the insurers have said I wouldn't get cover for that, it could become a massive source of stress. Thanks everybody for your time. Back to the drawing board.
