Vetting when buying a known horse

It's really down to you. I've had a couple of horses (all ex racers) who maximum price I ever paid was £1000 and never vetted one of them. The insurers I have insured them with haven't required a vet certificate - unless the horses' value is a above a certain amount (I think £4000+ for one company). Personally if I had a horse on loan for 9 months then many issues would have surfaced by now I would have thought and I wouldn't vet but it all depends on the price you're paying and your intended future use more so.

I wouldn't if no problems have arisen in the time you've had him. Lots of insurance companies will except a letter off your own vets stating that they haven't treated the horse in the last x months (with the exception of flu and tet. etc.) or even a basic health check or on horses we've imported a 'fit to travel' cert. has been accepted.
If you do vet I think sometimes (and experience has taught me) you really need to x-ray which comes in at about £850/900.
Good luck with your boy whatever!
