How many of you always vet a horse when buying? and do you do the two or five stage?

I've only bought youngsters in recent years and they've been near by so I can use my own vet that I trust and just do the two stage as they are unbacked.

I've spotted a horse that I really like but its miles away so I couldn't use my own vet. I spent alot of time with the horse yesterday in the hot weather and worked it pretty hard (its young but ridden). I do have years of experience and certainly know the horse is not lame and recovers well from exercise. so really the only thing I need checked are its eyes and a listen to its heart.

Do insurances insist on a vetting? Its a while since I've insured a horse too. I haven't bothered in the past as I have a few horses but may do with this one as I plan to do alot with her. She's not expensive so i wouldn't do loss of use just vet fees.

I always advise my clients to do a vetting, the more expensive ones have a 5 stage but use my own instinct and knowledge and they rarely fail.

If buying I usually just get a 2 stage done at the most and have bought many unvetted that later passed 5 stage when sold on.

For insurance they do not usually require a vetting certificate if under £5k but you will need to check the exact figure with your own company.
