Please can someone help me.

Had my horse vetted today (16.2hh TB Mare, no history of problems etc etc).

Passed all the flexion tests but then vet picked something up on lunging on concrete (unlevel concrete) re did the flexion tests fine. Then spun the horse in tight circles and passed that.

Any ideas/suggestions.

The vet picked something up on the lunging on a hard surface when my mare was vetted (she was 12 at the time, had no history of a problem but had had a shoe put back on the day before). Anyway he passed he as a riding club type horse, however, he said he'd failed an intermediate eventer for the same thing that day. 6 years on she now has arthritis in her front legs - whether the two are connected I don't know.

I had the vet out today for my horse who is (according to the physio) 1/10th lame on his near fore - vet asked me to lunge him on a hard surface and he did a very occasional uneven step (on either rein) - vet said nothing to worry about!

Also I had a horse a couple of years ago who would not come sound on the near fore when lunged on the hard (5 stage vetting) but the vet passed him anyway for PN eventing - although horse never made it that far (wouldnt SJ) he was always 100% sound at it was never ever a problem!

So personally I wouldnt worry too much, but that is just my humble opinion

I only wanted her for mooching about the odd RC event type thing really.

Its never as straight cut as a pass or fail they just gave me the information and that was it. Surely the flexion tests would show any issues?? But she passed them.

Discuss things with the vet, he should be able to advise you of the significance, if any, of what he found. It may well be that what he found may be significant if you wanted to event at a reasonable level but would mean nothing for what you want the horse for,

Only the vet can answer the questions you are asking.

Talk to the vet more.

My mare was found to have a slight deformity of the layrnx - immediate fail of a racehorse or top class eventer. Never stopped my mare from RC/hunting etc and shes become a graded sports pony and produced a healthy foal.

On the surface of it, if we hadn't asked more questions, some people would have walked away.

The lunging on concrete is what vets do, its a good idea for showing up under lying degenarative joint problems etc. Usually if the horse shows to be un level when the vet does this lunging on hard surface, they then recomend x rays, I would definitley now go down the xray route, could save you money in the long run.

The vet is coming back out in a week or so. He said he wants to see her trot up again on a hard surface (but she passed that in the vetting).

Why would she pass the flexion test but fail the lunge??
