Does anyone know if a previous owner is not allowed to let you see an old vetting as part of the data protection act? Also, can you get a copy of the vetting from your vet?

I got a pony and I don't think anything is wrong with him but my insurance comapny wanna see it. I didn't have one done - he didn't cost enough but they say they can't find it and aren't sure if they can give it out anyway because of a data protection. It was only done in Dec...so could they maybe get a copy of it from the vet?

Its a bit of a complicated story - so please don't jump on me or critisise. I just want to know the easiest way of getting it

If you didn't have the report done, how can the insurance company insist on seeing it?? Not that it would be relavent anyway....

How much are you insuring for?

Agree with AmyMay - usually if you dont have a vetting done, they dont see it - simple! If you want to insure for LOU then they will want a vetting certificate, but I would have thought you would need to get the vetting done yourself

Also, I would assume that if the vetting was done by a previous owner, you woul dneed to contact the previous owner in order to obtain a copy of it, and they would contact the vet.

I'm not sure why...I stupidly mentioned it and they said that they have to see one if it's been done. I think if I'd had one done they wouldn't want to see the old one.

If you didn't get a vetting done then you tell your insurance company this. If the pony is not worth much, then it is unlikely that they would insist on it, but they may not cover for LOU. You can always have the vet do an insurance vetting if it is necessary.

Neither the vet nor the previous owner have any obligation to give you a copy of it.

You did not have a vetting done, and the insurance company should not be asking you to provide something from a previous owner.

NFU mutual...I thought it was a bit weird too. I just mentioned the previous vetting in passing - I can't remember the context. Everyone has told me they're good though.

As a vetting is only as good as the day it was done on I have never heard of them wanting to see a old one - infact I have been told in the past if I wanted to get a higher value for horse I would need a new one done (previous one also about 9/10months old).

The vets won't give you a copy as that is data protection and the old owners (or people that had vetting done) do not have to show you.

Are you sure they understood you correctly? They may have thought you were referring to an old vetting you had done, perhaps for some underlying reason they might want to know about.

But you didn't so it's not pertinent. Just tell them you've never had the horse vetted and if they insist on one for some reason then you'll get a suitable current one done.

They can't ask you for something you don't have and you - and they - have no right to a vet report someone else contracted and paid for.

Ring their local branch. The national branch are a bit funny re vettings, they wanted me to have my old horse vetted before insuring him when I had owned him for 18mnths and never had the vet out to him. However, have sorted out insurance for new mare through them, I had a full 5 stage vetting including extra bits and they didnt want that at all! Strange.

Regarding the Data protection. The Vet is ONLY allowed to release the report to the person who asked and paid for it. This person is entitled to pass it onto anybody they want.
