When i bought my youngster as a 2yr old he couldn't have a 5 stage vetting due to his age but reqiured one for insurance. Insurance accepted a 2 stage instead as a 5 was not possible. Does anyone know if i will need to get a 5 stage done once he is in work enough (what age?) to keep the insurance as i want it or will it be fine as it is?

I doubt you'll need to. They don't make people vet their horses under a certain value anyway. Maybe if you were planning on increasing his value dramatically... But then you'll have a hard time getting them to agree to that in one go anyway.

I had a five stage vetting on my youngster but without the full ridden phase as she could only be lunged. My insurance company were happy with this and still insure her now that she is 7 without having to have another inspection. She was £6000.

I had a two stage when I bought Stinky as a yearling and he was insured at an agreed value of £2,500. Last year, when he was five, I increased his value to £4,000 as he is now doing very well and this was if anything the lower end of the scale of his value. My insurance company just asked for a written statement of the fact that he is now being ridden and a brief description of his competition record but did not ask for another vetting.

However some insurance companies if you want to start a new policy with them and the horse is valued at £4,000 want a five stage vetting so I won't be using them.

NFU and AMtrust say no need for a vetting if under £5k value, but if you do have one done for your own peace of mind, they want to see the certificate.

My vet said they would do the five stage on a 2yo we're interested in as long as he could be lunged or round penned sufficiently to do a full respiratory check. To do even a two stage they must be very well handled.

Hope this helps! :)
