Hi. Still on my search for my new pony! Found one I like, (through a friend of a friend) owner is happy for me to have him on loan for a month and then I can have him vetted by my vet. Only thing is I would be the one presenting the horse/riding for the vetting, is this ok? And does the vet then also consider if the horse is fit for purpose as in a suitable ride for the level of the owner? Always had the seller present at vettings in the past so just curious really

Absolutely okay for the purchaser to be the one presenting the horse, but the vet may wish to speak to the vendor beforehand (eg to ask about previous medical history etc) so just alert them to that. Good luck!

ETA with regards to telling if the horse is suitable for your level of riding, hopefully this is something you will have determined by the time you have had them on trial for a while. I’ve pointed out to purchasers when things have been tricky on the ground (failed one child’s pony that kicked me during the exam for that amongst other things) or if it’s come out quite sharp ridden etc, but ultimately that’s not really the vets job to tell if you’re capable of riding the horse. If the horse is bucking/rearing etc then that would be different as could be pain related.
