Can anyone give me an idea of how much I would pay for vettings at the moment and what is involved in the different stages? I have mixed feelings about them as bought my first horse without one no issues at all and had many lovely years with him and he was never sick or sorry. I was less lucky with my last horse as she had underlying severe arthritis not disclosed ny seller (a close friend) and ended up losing her as a result. Now hoping to buy again but very apprehensive and wanting to make sure I get it right however I've heard many people say a vetting isn't worth much as it can pick things up that are not really relevant?

I paid around £400 for a 5 stage vetting. I would never buy a horse without one, personally. Especially given how much horses cost in this day and age.

Speak to your vet about costing. The steps for two and five stage vetting are pretty standard. If buying a ridden horse I think it is worth paying the bit extra for 5 stage.

Whilst they are only a snapshot in time the vet will identify if the horse is likely to be suitable for your intended purposes (assuming you are upfront about your requirements).

I've never bought a horse without a vetting. I'm very much an an amateur but however experienced you are there are things you can't tell without a stethoscope, ophthalmoscope and a chip reader.
At the very least I want to know it hasn't got a heart murmur & whether its eyes are ok. You can also make sure its only got one chip & see if the age the chip tracks back to matches what you estimate from the teeth.

Edited to add this, which tells you what the stages are:

We paid £400 ish for 5 stage a year ago...the 3 stage wasn't a lot less from memory and totally worth the extra. The one we used said if they only got as far as 3 stage then couldn't proceed they would only change 3 stage fees x
