My horse goes best in a Happy mouth snaffle. However, I am now on the 3rd bit as he will chew it and get rough edges on the bit. I never notice him chewing as he is quite quiet in the mouth but he obviously has a sneeky chew when I'm not looking !

I have covered his new bit with a bit of vetwrap to stop him doing this but have not yet tried it in his mouth as I am worried that he will chew it off and swallow it. How do other people get around this problem?

My boy used to do this so i switched to sweet iron. He has a really soft mouth so i dont need to use much pressure and the bit is tasty so he works nicely and doesnt try to avoid the nasty metal.

You can buy "latex bandage bit tape" usually around £3 in most saddlers that is designed for this job so has been totally tested for use in a horses mouth..

This is why I hate happy mouth bits, they are all fine and dandy til the horse has a little nibble on them then the plastic can be so sharp it cuts the horse's mouth

I would say either use a metal/sweet iron/alloy bit, try a vulcanised bit or go bitless. I would put a happy mouth in my horse's mouth for £1 million!

Is this different from just normal "latex" bandage, as I bought this and couldn't get it to stay on the bit ! Probably got the wrong stuff.

I'm reluctant to buy another bit as he is on loan and is going home in July, but it looks that I might have to.

I and my mare really like sweet iron.
You could always talk to your horse's owner and ask her if she would be willing to share the cost if you send the new bit back to her with him in July.

ya different to normal latex wrap it is made to stick to the bit and it is appled flavoured you can buy it from most saddlers!
