My foal Danny is at the vets, :( and not in a good way.
Checked him wed night at 7 and he was fine, went to the field at 645 thur morning and he was on three legs and his pastern joint was very swollen.
Called the vet and when she came she scraped the foot hoping it was an absces but nothing so we took him into the clinic to rule out a break and to tap the foot

X rays are clear but when she clipped the leg she found two pin prick holes and a small cut just above the coronet. she then tapped the foot she discovered the sheath around the tendon was infected and the fluid coming out was very cloudy (a sample has been sent to the lab), not much of a difference to the joint re size, so she was going to re drain the sheath today.

Phoned this morning and now his knees and hocks have swelled up. hes still nursing and getting up and down. just waiting now for the vet to phone to say how todays drain has gone (they going to do his other joints aswell) im in hell of a state and so scared, hes my everything

Has anyone had any experience good or bad, if the draining dont improve the leg by mon hes having a magic eye and theyve talked to me about the ligament also being cut to give the sheath more space

Lots of ((((((vibes))))))
Only similar experience I have had was a hock injury. Mare came in hopping, only a very small cut to see. When vet came hole was very deep. Tendon sheath became infected and she spent a good few weeks in vets having it drained. She came home eventually and spent about 3 months on box rest before being allowed out.
Although she did come sound, she was never jumped again.
Only way we could think she did it was rolling on a stone in field.

update today..........
what a difference in 12 hours. I didnt see him last night but my mum went down, i had to work :( she saw him a few hours after his draining (knees and hocks this time as they had gone up, and his pastern) and he was a very ill looking boy, the vet stayed at the clinic last night to keep an eye on him.

Well this morning i was in tears he was danny again, he was so happy and bright (not on pain killers as they need to monitor how lame he is) he was chewing chimes mane and neighed at me when he saw me. Unfortunately still very swollen and still lame but not holding his leg as high.

Tomorrow hes having an endiscope (think ive spelt it correct) a specialist is coming in to do it, so fingers crossed and we going to see him tomorrow when he comes round.
Well then at 10 the vets phoned, my heart was in my mouth :( but they'd gone to top up his antibiotics and found him putting his foot on the floor :) :) still lame and swollen but hes accepting weight, op still on for tomorrow just hoping that what they find is fixable xxxx

Sorry S, didn't know you'd been getting any stick. What in god's name for???? You and the vets are doing your absolute best for the little lad. Sounds at least that things are moving in the right direction. Got everything crossed for him. If he's at the same vets I go to, he's in the best place possible and they will look after him as if he was one of the family. Give him a hug from H&H next time you see him xxx

He had his op this morning, they found infection nr the navicular bone. all been cleaned out and the annular ligament has been cut so its down to him to fight now. hes being so strong, when he came round from the anasetic he dragged phillipa and steph back to chime at canter. hes also putting weight on it as of last night (he not on pain killers though)
