Dexter is a 13YO West Highland, owned by my Aunti and Uncle.

For reasons only known to them (grrr if you ask me) they insist upon leaving the dog with my grandmother - who has angina - while they go away here there and everywhere.

Which was fine when Dex was hale, but now as a pedigree at 13, he suffers from the worst skin I have ever seen on a westie (black, scaled, raw - he is under the vet for this) and trembles all the time, is VERY doddery. He's old and my grandmother is only too aware he is going to die pretty soon.

Yesterday we were woken up by frantic calls from my Nan saying he was bleeding and could we come and help her. Driving there, hoping it wasn't his nose, mouth or arse...we eventually arrived to see a very sorry Dexter - with blood clotted all under his tummy and legs - appearing to come from his penis.

Rang the vet, booked him in, took him down. Vet was a little perplexed as there was no real trace of the blood when we got there, but diagnosed a UTI from what we'd described. Said his prostate was enlarged and he had possible tumours on his testicles.

We returned him home and are now awaiting owners to come home.

So vibes for Dex please, he's a sweetie. And possibly time to tell my Auntie and Uncle they cannot drop the dog to my Nan as and when they feel like swanning around places. Not if the stress of the dog dying is possibly going to kill my nan too....

Kitty :)

Oh dear sounds like a horrible situation for everyone involved! Huge vibes for Dexter, hope he feels better soon and hugs for your Nan who's having such a tough time.

This is very sad for Dexter & your nan, sounds as though his life is just a struggle and its dragging your nan down.

This poor little dog needs to be pts to save further suffering and your aunt & uncle need to take their head out the sand and do the right thing.

Hope this is resolved quickly in the interests of the dog and your nan.

Poor Dexter, {{{{vibes}}}} for him, although does rather sound as if the poor chap has a few problems to deal with and he is a great age!

Hope i'm wrong, so fingers crossed x

Yeah coming from someone who let their dog go on for too long (never again) I'd be looking to let go sooner, rather than later. I'd love to see him perk up and go quietly too. Thanks guys

Kitty,

you're fully entitled to be miffed. You're also entitled to point out the facts of life to your relatives. It's not on, and that's that!!

Alec.

There comes a point that they have to go, they end up just existing rather than having nice life, I knew it was time with my 16 yr old terrier cross, you have to let them go, and if there is any pain involved sooner rather than later if nothing can be done bless him.

I have to agree that it does sound as if poor lad is struggling now and needs his owners to put him first. I cannot understand your Aunt and Uncle, my old bitch Buffy has a few health problems and I am reluctant to even be away over night and leave her.

Im reluctant to leave my two and they are 3!

They dote on Dex - I think he's their child replacement as I guess they either didnt want or couldnt have kids :( and I know it will really break them to lose him, but there's only so long you can keep them going before it becomes cruel.

Plus, what if I'm not aroun d- I'm the only one who can take him to the vets!

Poor Dexter :( Massive ((((((((((((vibes))))))))))))) from Charlie Brown, Gem and I. and ((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))) to you and your nan. I hope you manage to have a word with your Aunt and Uncle and get them to see whats best for him.
