We have a little spanish 2yr old on grass livery at work. She has lived in this field for about 3 months with no problems but this afternoon she decided to run through the blackthorn hedge and over the barbed wire fence which was in the hedge. (Please no comments on the barbed wire its not my fields). We have no idea what made her do it.
She had taken all of the skin off of the front of her near hind hock. (I have photos but they are yucky). As well as being covered in blackthorn stratches.
We hosed while the vet was on her way.
The vet had a very good poke about and she has completely severed one part of the common digital extensor tendon and stredded the other part. Vet said this isn't too worrying.
She has taken everything off of part of the cannon bone including the periosteum. Not good. We could see the bone.
Vet is worried she could of done some damage to the hock bone capules (think that is what she called them) but is waiting 24hours to see as she has good movement in the hock.
Vet put a drainage hole in as she has a pocket of flappy skin that was collecting the blood etc.
So poor little mare is now bandaged from stifle to hoof and is having IM ABs twice a day and IV ABs once a day and being bandaged once a day for the near future.
She is so sweet, why does it always happen to the sweet ones.

Gawd...... sounds horrible. Lots of get well vibes for her (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((()))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Hope she recovers ok, poor little lass

Big Vibes for little Spanish Pony. I know how you all must feel. I have an Andalusian strangely enough. Almost 2 years ago I found him in the field happily grazing although he couldnt walk. I thought he'd been kicked but further investigation showed he'd got caught up in barbed wire on the inside of his hock and had ripped his leg open down to the bone. There was this frothy stuff coming out which the vet thought was maybe joint fluid. Luckily it wasnt. He was bandaged from stifle to hoof for some time. Due to excellent and swift veterinary care 3 months later he won his first HT. Lets hope little spanish chap is as lucky as mine was. If the vet is any bit as good as mine, I'm sure he will be ok in time.
