We have a 20 year old warmblood mare. She's broken just about everything since we've had her, including shattering splint bones in both hind legs (on separate occasions, 1 of which was an open hock wound that required a lengthy stay at Leahurst), torn a check ligament, torn a lateral digital extensor tendon, has arthritic hocks, she has cushings disease and insulin resistance & colics spasmodically at the drop of a hat. She's an ex showjumper, and the most well mannered school mistress u could ever meet. Even toddlers ride her.
Anyway, got down today and she has a MASSIVE hind leg. Very hot & very swollen. No noticeable lameness though. The vet is coming first thing in the morning anyway to take bloods to re-test her for cushings/IR. I just don't know what to do if she's torn something else :-( I'd have called the vet tonight, but she didn't seem to be in pain. So fed up :'(

Thank you all. Just to let you know that the vet has just been. She's convinced that it's cellulitis and that nothing is torn or broken :D We can't find any cuts or scrapes which would have allowed the bacteria in, but it's hard to see cos her legs are so hairy. Plus, with the cushings disease, her immune systems will be compromised moreso than a 'normal' horse, so even the teeny tiniest scratch could have started it.
Anyhoo, antibiotics and we'll see how we go. She's allowed turnout, and the vet has also said to poultice her hoof to see if that brings anything out. So fingers crossed that's all it is and she's soon fixed...well, as 'fixed' as a horse as broken as Mo can be :)
Forgot to say in my initial post that she also had a cannon bone chip on a hind leg too...just to add to the other injuries!

Gah! I hate horses!!
