As you know I don't really ask for vibes, but later we are taking BoyDog to the vet in Belfast who operated on his, erm, 'wonky willy' when he was a baby puppy as I am just not happy with him this week.

He just isn't 'right' - he isn't his usual happy self, his ears are at half-mast, appetite isn't there, there are a couple of issues with his allergies and his peeing that I feel are not being addressed by our local vets.
I am hoping it may just be a combination of the recent heat and the fact that his sister being in season has put him out of sorts but anyway, your positive thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hi guys, thanks again. Here is a wee (ahem) update!

Despite an eye-watering bill for a consultation, a bottle of ear stuff and another bottle of Malaseb, this vet, in 45 minutes, did more for us than the other numerous visits to our local vet and probably will eventually cost us about the same.

He agreed that Bodo has an pollen allergy-aggravated atopia skin condition (not mites....) and said we are managing it really well. We are switching to a new anti-histamine and continuing Malaseb shampoo and see where that goes, there are stronger options to consider if need be.
He has a lot of hair, he is a big, sweaty, active dog who unfortunately lives among a lot of trees and grass so it is something we will just have to keep an eye on.

So, to the other issue. We gave Bodo a drink and followed him around the car park until he performed.
The stream was good and strong but there was still some blood.
Vet agreed (HALLELUJAH) that whacking him on antibiotics all the time wasn't the answer and that the problem needs to be explored, especially given the previous surgery in that area.

So...next Thursday...a week today...seven days...he is going to get his nadgers off.
While under, they are also going to explore along his urethra and if need be, go as far as his bladder as there may be some inflammation there.

So I will need lots more finger-crossing that it won't be anything too serious and that he will recover quickly from so much hoking about in his nether regions.

This is going to involve a lot of travelling and expense, I just wish I'd done it sooner.
Guys - if you need a second opinion, get it as soon as you can! And if anyone wants to donate to the cause, my bank account details are.......

ETA - he said appetite loss was probably to do with Bella's season and the warm weather.

for the good news and sympathy for the money and travelling it will cost you, though I know you'll do it gladly to get him better, it still isn't easy.


The only male cat my family have owned, many years ago, had periods of peeing blood because he developed stones in his bladder and this was before all these special veterinary diets came. So when he got new stones he needed pills and you know all those stories you can hear about how difficult it can be to give pills to certain cats? I think he wrote that book...

Thanks guys, and I also hope the snip will also help with the dog aggression.

He 'sang' throughout, while in the company of other dogs in the waiting room, but was generally good with the Sheltie, the mini wire-haired Dachs, two small hairy white things (which I presume he didn't recognise as being dogs

) and the CKCS - but a cocker spaniel sent him over the edge.
I was holding onto him very tightly and the only way he could go was up so he ended up on the coffee table thing between the seats

The vet even let us leave via the back door to prevent a repeat performance.....oops!
 
Glad you found the second opinion worthwhile. Fingers crossed for next week, really hope they can sort him out. I'm sorry but had to smile at your description of the waiting room scenario, there's no worse place to be with a dog who has issues with others, particularly when they are all usually stressed

lol singing in the vets waiting room is a favourite trick of Ellies. I've come to the conclusion that Shepherds just love the sound of their own voice!

I'm interested to hear about his allergy...Ellie seems to be a very itchy doggy of late and a bit fed up. Bathing her is a pain because she doesn't understand stairs and as long as we've owned her she has never figured them out so the only way we can bath her is outside from a hose with cold water and I always feel evil!!!

I was actually starting to wonder myself if she may have an allergy or something.

Let me know how he gets on without his nadgers!

Forcibly make dog stand.
Throw bucket of water at dog.
Try not to scream after he shakes all over you.
Massage in Malaseb shampoo.
Remove water and shampoo from your person.
Leave for ten minutes.
Try to stop dog puking after he licks shampoo from his person.
Fill another bucket of lukewarm water.
Try to persuade dog to stand up.
Forcibly make dog stand.
Throw bucket of water over dog.
Try not to scream after he shakes all over you.
Remove water and shampoo from your person.
Wash out shampoo.

Yeah, I love bathtime. And I have given him a phobia of buckets.

At our summer home we have no indoor running water, we shower by filling buckets that we hang up (maybe at around 1,5 meters height) on a wall, then we put one end of a plastic tube thingy, actually made to empty home aquariums with, in the bucket. In the other end of the tube-thingy it has a pump-thing, that we pump a little to get the water flowing and together it works great as a shower.

Sympathy with Bodo's baths.

had to do all of that with our late elderly lab every week after swimming

my horses can thank ben that we now have hot water in the wash box

on a less serious note, I'm having to shampoo our gsdx every time she is allowed to come poo picking. the summer grazing (rented) contains a medieval moat with stagnant mud.

madam cheerfully trots under the electric fencing to enjoy a dip
