my darling raff is not well. was found in field on 3 legs. amazing vet came. xrayed and thinks it's a spiral fracture. at top of front right leg.

please can you all think of him/pray for him/send him vibes.

he's currently cross-tied to stop him making it worse and i have to see how it is in the morning. as nothing showed up on the xray, there is a chance it's not broken. but apparently spiral fractures can take 10 days to show up. so... let's hope it's miraculously healed in the morning...

does anyone have any POSITIVE experiences with this type of fracture so high up the leg?

as anyone who reads my posts will know, Raff is quite literally the love of my life. and a few hours ago i thought i was going to have to say goodbye to him.

:(

oh poor you :( and poor raff :( (())

sorry no experience or fractures of any kind let alone spiral ones. though the scientist in me might think they were better because they would be self supporting for healing (thought thats just in my imagination)

Gosh that's awful, I really hope it turns out to be a better case senario than it looks at the moment. Big Big hugs to you and Raff xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

replied on SFA Clip but also, my RI had a similar scare at Christmas - Grand Prix dressage horse on three leg, same fears, thought he had managed to get kicked, he turned out fine and it was muscle damage so fingers crossed for you so much xxx

Fingers, hooves, paws, toes and everything else crossed for him CCP.

Vibes for a speedy recovery:)

clippy there is a previous thread on here (2008) that comes up that seems pretty positive, happy horse had one, spiral fracture of the radius so she might be worth a pm. had ringbone too which complicated amount of work it could return too but did return to work

clippy I have just had a look and have found an old post in vetinary on here. I t would seem that if the horse concerned is kept fairly immobile for a period of weeks - obviously vet will advise - the bone should heal and be as good as new. :)

So lets hope the worst case scenario is weeks of box rest and then some recovery time at grass and then he will be back to normal.:)

that was it! spiral fracture of his radius. i'll have a look, i don't want to read anything bad though... i'm feeling a smidge fragile. :(

i was holding onto him to have his xrays and i thought they were going to tell me i had to pts tonight. my god, i couldn't have done it. i can't cope. it's too hard. especially cos he was still perky, and snuggly. just on three legs... :(
he's such a sweetheart, he really is.

vet seemed to think that was probably the way to go. 6 weeks cross tied box rest. luckily, out of all the horses in the world, Raff is a very laid back chap. i can cope with that. i can cope with box rest. i just can't cope without him. :(

oh Clippy, my heart goes out to you :( Keeping everything crossed for you and Raff. Please keep us posted. Big hugs. xxx

Oh no I'm sorry to read this, I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for Raff that its not a fracture!

Both B and my friends horse convinced the vet they had a fracture. With B it was his hock (see my FB pics of him in his robert jones!) and my friends horse they thought she had fractured her radius - both turned out to be completely and utterly fine....B was fine 36 hours later, and after giving Liphook the major run a round, it turned out my friends horse literally had a 'dead' shoulder, and she too was fine.

thank you all. i've PM'd someone on here who had same thing. luckily all experiences seem positive. so i'm going to stay positive. wipe the snot and tears away and have a hot bath. he's in very good hands tonight as YO is ace.
i'll let you all know in the morning how he is... fingers crossed he's fixed! :)

clipclop my friend big geldong had a spiral fracture of his radius last year he was cross tied for 6 weeks then anothert 8 weeks box rest the slowly turned out again same horse is now out showjumping again and you would never now he had anything wrong with him so fingers crossed but the outcome can be very good

An old friend's horse fractured a bone in her leg after getting it caught in a metal gate.

She was crossed tied for 6 weeks I think to stop her lying down, as getting up can displace the fracture.

I don't remember the full story regarding rehabilitation but the mare recovered and returned to work. Was never in any hard work (don't think they jumped for example anyway) but she was back in work. She wasn't overly young when it happened either, I don't think.
