I would really appreciate some vibes for my share mare Maisy.

She came down with colic at 10am this morning and hadn't pooed until 9.30pm! We have been walking her out every hour and have finally had poo!

The vet says she has a twist so we are hoping it is clearing now.

She is 24 years old so not a candidate for surgery.

Am hoping to get a couple of hours sleep before going up again.

Please poo vibes would be amazing! (for the horse not me!)

Thanks :) she also isn't wanting to drink anything so we are worried about dehydration. Is there anything we can do to encourage her?

I've never tried it but have heard of people adding juice to their water to make it more appealing, or can't you make a very runny mash, like a porridge consistency?

(((healing vibes))) heading your way for your mare and ((((hugs)))) for you.
Fingers crossed all OK , such a worrying time when they are ill :(

I just wish she could tell us what to do to make her better.

I'm so worried about her. She is my world- I even moved house to be closer to the yard!

I do hope she is okay. One of mine recently had colic surgery for the 2nd time at the age of 25, so it is possible in an older horse if they are otherwise fit and well. He was 19 the first time. Keeping everything crossed for you.

Hi my colicky prone horse gets like this not wanting to drink !! And even when the wheather is cold , I find that offering Luke warm water with a bit is apple / orange juice may help works for mine , healing vibes keep us updated on how she is !! X

Thanks zero tolerance. (sorry can't quote as on my phone).

She's been through quite a lt of surgery in her life and is slowing down a bit now so I don't think it would be fair to put her through it (neither does her owner).

When her owner called I literally ran out of work. I haven't driven so fast before! Probably shouldn't again!

Fully understand - it's a decision only owners/carers can make as they're the ones who know the horse best. We were discussing with the vet what to do (the 2nd time) when mine dragged us across the yard to the lorry - as if he knew where to go - when we put the ramp down, he pretty much ran in - so kind of made the decision for us.
Hope for a good outcome and take care driving.

Lol it sounds as if he was telling you what he wanted!

Only hoping moo pulls through too.

There seems to be so much colic about at the moment- the vet was saying she has had to send three horses for colic surgery just this week. Don't know what's going on!

Fingers crossed too - my 23 yo mare pulled through a suspected twist about a month ago, surgery was never an option. Hope she pulls through too x

Race buddy- just saw your message about the lukewarm water. Will try this later when I go down. Will try adding some squash to it if her owner doesn't mind.

. Oh, colic. Been there done that and bought several tee shirts and become very adept at assisting the vet with naso-gastric intubations! If she has been intubated and water and liq paraffin passed down she may not want/need to drink for a while. In my mare's case the vet used to pass a 2 gallon bucketful of fluid at a time two or three times a day!

Peppermint oil added to water is an old way of persuading horses to drink.

If shes not drinking at all you could try just syringing water or an human electrolyte solution into her mouth like a wormer regularly..preferably with something to make it tastier like apple juice etc so it wont be resented... in an effort to keep her hydrated. It wont be enough to keep a large horse hydrated in the long term but if shes doing a lot walking and sweating it might be enough to keep her from getting mild dehydration which will make her feel even worse.

Adding carrot pieces or apple pieces to the water and having lukewarm water can entice some horses to drink as well.

However if she has been tubed liquid parrafin or refluxed with water she may be reluctant to drink at the minute as she has fluids in her system

Fingers crossed you see more poo soon!

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the slow update. Went down a couple of times in the night and there wasn't anything in there.

Went down again at 8.30 and she had pooed and had a mucky tail so I think she had some runny stuff too.

Have given her a handful of pony nuts and she will have a handful and a nibble of grass every hour when she is walked to see of the lack of poo is because she hasn't actually eaten anything.

She still hasn't drunk so if the nuts and grass don't encourage her we will syringe it in.

She is still bright in herself but just no poo!

Thanks for all the vibes!
