ok. My horsey came in lame on Friday, Saturday he was worse and vet came.

She advised pain is in his hoof and that she thought it was an abcsess. However, there is not reaction to the hoof tester and she cannot find anything. She says it could be fractured pedal bone (v worried me).
He is still lame but not as bad as Saturday after box rest and poulticing (nothing coming out). He does have a nasty bruise near his frong under where his shoe would go (sorry, not very technical)!

He is really a really pathetic TB and I'm really concered. Vet wants to send him for X rays, which I will have to pay for (high XS insurance). Farrier is comming for a dig around tomorrow.
Any opinions/advise??? Also healing vibes please

Thanks and Galaxy choc for getting this far!

Wait until the farrier has a good poke and a prod - my very delicate and wimpish TB was hopping lame with no heat or swelling or 1-2 days for a few weeks in succession, bute and restricted turnout alleviated the pain but he carried on with the intermitness foot waving akin to 'aaaargh, my foot is falling off and I am actually dying' and after a bit of a dig we found the teeniest, weeniest speck of pus. Poulticed for a few days and all was well.

He didn't present with pus symptoms either, so please don't worry too much just yet!

Not sure if this is the right thing to say, but would it hurt to wait and see if anything rights itself???

I suppose if the pedal bone is broken badly then surgery would be required, but if not, the only experience I have of it is that a long period of boxrest is required.

If its an abcess then it will have time to develop.

My farrier is great and I trust him with hoof releated things more than the vet (is that bad??)

So cross fingers for tomorrow. My thought was that if something was fractured then he wouldn't get any better?

They always think its a fractured pedal bone.

IME it rarely is, I wouldn't worry yet just rest the horse anyway if its lame.

Worrying doesnt help but we all do it!!! Last year my boy came in sooo lame, I called my farrier as like you trust him so much more than vet, he had a dig around and thought there may be pus and from how stupidly lame he was everyone came to watch the pus explode from the foot!!! Well it didnt happen we got a tiny speck!!! It was so funny but within 3 days he had a shoe back on as he is a wimpy TB and needs it and after that he was fine!!! So dont panic just see what your wonderful farrier says!!! Vibes and good luck!!!

My boy had bruised heels tb (say no more) changed his shoes to natural balance and he was a bit better.I had to keep working him on vets instruction because he had surgery on hocks (for fusion) and he now has a splint from concussion.I would give him a couple of weeks off with restricted turnout if its not a abcess.Tbs seem to bruise easily and the rest wont do his legs or feet any harm.Mine was so sore the vet thought he had blown his supensory ligament I was so relieved when it turned out to be splint or fracture. If his feet are very flat concussion could be the problem and rest will do the trick.

Def wait for the farrier, more than likely an abscess - I have had so many 'scares' when my horse does this and, even when an abscess has not been found initially it always blooming turns out to be one!
