Hi Victoria

Your post about EDTs was very useful - thank you.

I wonder if you could give me some advice? My horse has a black tooth, it is black in the centre where the tree rings are too. It is a tooth he injured many years ago. It is bottom right just before where the bars of the mouth are and near where the bit would sit.

Do you think it would need removing?

Thanks, I am neurotic about it.

Hi

No problem

Difficult to say without seeing, could you post a pic? To me it sounds as the the tooth has effectively "died" meaning the pulp cavity has been exposed during the injury and compromised the tooth.

TBH the best thing to do would be to get your EDT to monitor it every 6 months. We try not to remove teeth especially if they still remain functional for chewing etc. It is just important to monitor in case it loosens over time or develops a root abcess but this may never happen.

Many many thanks to you Victoria! Wine, chocolates and flowers to you.

Picture will be difficult as horse throws his head around when mouth is opened, but will try.

Have poked and prodded but as he throws his head around its difficult to know if it is pain or a strop. I suspect he is throwing a strop!

Am so relieved that he wont need it removed.

thank you so much.

Am off to try to get a picture of his smile!

Henry the vet came out today. Jake's tooth is dead (RIP tooth), but he said to leave it in, but keep an eye on it.

Thank you for your advice, have decided to leave it alone.
