Videoed my saturday ride , took about 1.5 hours, managed to put about 8 minutes of the nasty road part on Youtube, shows how they pretend to cater for us with bridleways and horse signs, but make it so dangerous nobody uses it, then they can turn round and say "well nobody uses it", also shows the speed of drivers passing me on what is supposed to be a de-truncked road, this was at approxx 9.30 on a saturday morning when traffic not very busy, was a bit hairy riding one handed with a vidcam , whoever passed in a large horse lorry, well you didn't wave and looked miserable as sin, maybe you were too posh to wave to a hacker , enjoy.

Woah. Firstly I cant get over how dangerous some of them roads are, and you are incredibly brave to even attempt them. Let alone record them at the same time! Secondly Im amazed at how bombproof your horse is!
I would say send it into the BHS but itll probably end up with you in trouble for using a hand held device on the roads whilst riding.

He's a very good boy, "most of the time" when out alone, we ride that route most saturdays, sometimes with sensible company, he is also very full of grass at the moment

Good grief! thats horrendous, I think I would be inclined to join forces with other riders, livery yards etc and complain to the council and to the media.....it may not do any good but worth a try.

I bet the person who designated that route, has never seen a horse in his/her life, let alone ridden one!
Pedantic, you are one brave fella, you wouldnt catch me out on those roads, I am simply not brave enough!
 
Pissing in the wind from previous experience, nobody seems interested when I mention it, horsey people are their own worst enemy when it comes to any action, as far as I know I am the only person who rides that route, I have 2 friends with sensible horses who have come with me now and again, they never do it on their own, only me crazy enough, I just wanted people to see how bad it is and how many cars sped past me on a road with horse signs, and not even works time

its soo frustrating when drivers dont slow down, they really dont know how life threatening it actually is passing a horse at high speed!!!!
 
youtube being slow- made it to 3:11 but also in some ways not fair on drivers, I for one would certainly not be expecting to see a horse there.

I assume their are signs up but when riding on verges I have found people do drive fast past as they think you are out of the way so they don't have to go round you.

They are probably also assuming that people would only be taking 'bombproof' horses around such a road. we know that they are not always like that.

Its a route I would be avoiding!

Your horse is so good, he doesnt seem to care at all

Do you thank everyone that goes past you, even if they are speeding? I do, it shames a lot of people and when you see them again they remember

There are 2 women by me who NEVER EVER thank drivers for slowing down and it is these idiots that give riders a bad name

I can't believe you ride along there - it makes me even more grateful for where I am - I should show it to some on my yard who moan about 2 cars in 3 hours!! We are so lucky as apart from very quiet country lanes and lots of bridleway we also have 18 miles of off road toll route we can use.
 
What about sending the first part of the video to your local council (footpaths and bridleways officer) and asking them for suggestions about improving safety on the "designated horse route"? (The traffic at the end looked to be keeping to the speed limit to me but I am glad I don't have to ride there. I presume you were not supposed to take a horse through the green barriers to the grass track? Although I sympathise with why you did)

From what I can see on the video, I don't think that drivers would be expecting horses, (and I don't see how you can indicate or thank drivers with a camera in one hand), without that, then that they are unlikely to behave or learn any better.

My lad is a star in traffic,and yes if i had to i would ride that route...however i wouldnt choose to

I have to hack down a 40 limit "main" road through a couple of villages - similar amount of traffic to the last part of the vid.

I have to say I purposefully do not ride in the gutter and carry a long schooling whip with me to stop traffic squeezing between me and oncoming traffic. I am however sensible and do not make the traffic queue behind me and will pull into a junction, top of a driveway etc to let cars pass if the traffic is very busy.

I thank EVERYONE, I was taught as Weezy mentioned to thank everyone and shame the speeders into passing slower next time.

I honestly cannot believe anyone would think that is safe to make a designated riding route!

Waste of time contacting council, no one else intersted so only going to be me, cant even get the rights of way officer to take the Post office van zooming down our bridleway seriously.
Dont know about the grass track through the barrier bit, it doesn't say no horses, but anyway it's away from the traffic so I use it, ridden the route lots and not met one single person along that stretch yet, so what you gonna use the road with ignorant drivers or the safer route, as I said, it doesn't say no horses or no anything else for that matter, if it said cyclists I would definately use it, we pay enough so why should we get the [****] end of the stick "all" the time, my horse is insured which is taxed, how many cyclist are insured, answers on a postage stamp.

How many Horse signs do drivers need, maybe they didn't come out too well on the vid, there are at least 4 if not 5 Horse signs, surely you aren't telling me drivers dont read road signs, surely not bless them.
Err did you think I ride that route with a camera every time, Duhh, noooo, I only had the camera that time to show the ridiculous route deignated by some useless suit and tie who hasn't a bloody clue, I do thank drivers with a wave normally, but I dont have to bother waving much as you can see, in between shots my camera goes in my saddle bag so I could indicate where necessary.
Nowhere on that route is marked clearly or otherwise "No Horses", and clearly as that route is "clearly" marked as a "Horse"riding route, I am sure they would have put no horse signs where they didn't want us, they love putting signs up for everything else, think they have shares in a sign company, so they definately would have done.

Regardless of whether or not it's a designated route, if you think it's SUCH a dangerous one then I can't see why you are using it

There's roads round here that I used to ride on years ago, but won't do now because of the traffic etc, despite recent modifications that are supposed to have made it safer for horses. I just don't think it's worth the risk.
