Off on a massive road trip to see another potential tomorrow!

Have a list of questions & they've been very honest about his issues etc.

Only bit worrying me is they haven't got a school for me to try him in so assume we'll be hacking about.

Any tips for trying out a horse without an arena?

It depends what you want to do with the horse if you are just going to hack thats fine but still make sure they get on first to make sure it is sensible.
If you want to jump or dressage in the future and you like the horse go back for another trial and get them to take it somewhere, offer to pay for hiring an arena if you have to, as you cannot assess it fully on a hack and they should be prepared to show it to you properly if you are a serious buyer.

Especially if you are going a long way, PLEASE call them back to ascertain exactly what facilities they have for showing you the horse. It can be a massive waste of time to find that their fields resemble a ploughed field or the side of a mountain and the only thing you can do it hack down a quiet lane.

Sometimes you arrive and find no-one has given a sensible thought to how you will actually try the horse out.

I'll give her a ring later & just ask if there's a paddock or something I can pop some jumps in as that's what I want it for. They have a school nearby they use usually but the last few weeks there's been pigs next to it so they said its probably best avoided. I know he's strong jumping from videos I've watched but would like to know to what extent :) Will definately give her a ring back later to check.

If you want to jump they must take it somewhere for you to try properly, the pigs may just be a ruse to avoid you trying it jumping, if they have transport there are no excuses to not go somewhere to show it to you, dont be fobbed off , back out if they will not.

That's what the skeptical side of me is saying too, that maybe they think the jumping will put me off. Going to ring now & ask before I go making the trek tomorrow.

What you could do as suggested they need to find you an area ie even if corner of another field with a few jumps put up etc the ground is soft so you just want to see if they are ok round a small course(if they have the jumps). You need to see the horse do all the things that you want to do with it. If the evade helping you I would be highly suspicious etc.
But good luck and yes ring tonight to check the questions even if you put them in a different way its suprising how answers can change!

I'm happy :) we're going on a few miles hack & she knows of a few fences I can have a pop over so she's not trying to stop me jumping as she's thought about it. Looking forward to it now :)
