Views on cortazone injections in the sacroiliac joint

Had my mare checked by a vet again and he said that it would be a good idea to try injecting cortazone in the SI joint as nothing is showing up in the legs..

Has anyone had this done before and what are your views??
 
My horse was injected earlier ths year and came back in to work and was going well and then went lame, he has now been diagnosed with DJD in both hocks. He has had no more SI issues but then he has been out of work for 2 months as he is lame.
 
I wouldn't want to do anything before a bone scan to be honest as SI injection is not very easy and you're just stabbing in the dark unless you know that is where the problem lies.

From your description of the mare it does sound like an SI problem, but I would want it checked out by an expert at a referral centre before treating things without a diagnosis. SI problems are often secondary to hind limb issues and hind limb issues are often secondary to SI problems - I would want an expert to determine which way round things were before randomly injecting.

For what its worth we are currently attempting to rehab an eventer with a SI problem that was diagnosed by Sue Dyson at AHT who used scintigraphy as part of her assessment. Rehab includes SI injections, physiotherapy and months and months of walking in a Pessoa.......
 
I dont think I would want to be injecting anywhere just to see if it works, if it is not the cause of your horses problems you will be delaying finding out what is.
I would, if insured, be pushing to be referred to a specialist for a proper work up as it seems that your vet is not able to diagnose the problem and if you are not careful you run the risk of so many different treatments going on and on until you either run out of insurance money or on renewing it they make so many exclusions and you cannot go for further investigation or treatment.

I know someone that had their horse injected in the sacroiliac joint, it was not the cause of its lameness and they wasted several months on rehab then had to start again after correct treatment.
 
Thank you for help! i think i will get it checked by experts and see if there is any more tests that we can do before she has the injections then!!

If they all show up that SI injections are the way to go how long is rehab and has anyone got any horses that have benefited a lot from this treatment?
 
Lots of horses seem to suffer from problems with the SI joint. Is it normally degenerative or is it an acute problem that can be sorted out with the correct treatment (whatever that may be)?
 
Try ringing a chap called Jose Gomas He is a Vet and Chiropractor. I will pm you his number.

You could also try acupuncture. Jose also does Acupuncture but I can also give you a number of a vet that does it.
