I'm considering an ex eventer on loan, he has a back issue but has now settled, the owner has agreed to pay vets bills...ideas? Good/bad experiences with ex eventers? Thanks

I'd be wary of time off he'll potentially have due to his back injury - although the owner may pay vet bills you'll still be paying the upkeep on a horse you cant ride
Other than that I'm sure he'd be lovely and could teach you a lot

I was given one at about 20 years old as a horse to lead my son's pony from.

She was fantastic, I had her pts at 26 at the start of the winter when her stifle locking started to bother her.

In the five years I had her she taught two people to ride ,did pony club camp and went cubbing. I'd take another tomorrow.

Only issue was a boating lake near one of our hacking routes -whenever the klaxon went off she grew two hands and was ready for a start!

For everyone: he is a 16.3hh chunky ex three star eventer who is 7yo. He is in work now and can do all that I could need to, hack school jump local shows etc. it is a possible hereditary issue, basically only one side of pelvis has like muscle etc, he is sound and loves to jump...it has muscle it's just one side is less "developed" than the pther

I have one, he'd bee with a pro for 10 years, he;'s wondeful now but took a little time to setle into being more of a riding club horse - he was mega fit when he came out of eventing (he was eventing in the road and tracks/ steeplechase days tho so much fitter than they need to be now) and used to lot exercise and tonnes of hard feed - I cut the hard feed and gave him 3 months in a field to unwind you could see him relax day by day.

WHile he was great with some things (people with unbrellas) others that he wasn't used to (foxes ! Tractors etc.) we had to practice. First time I took him to dressage he was very confused to go back into the second test and not find jumps and to then box up and go home - not XC!

He will have had a lot of pressure on him to get to 3* age 7 and with an injury so be prepared to spend time helping him unwind.

Once you've got them goingworth their weight in gold

Okay thank you! I jumped him this evening in our sand school and he was good as gold! I can defiantly see an improvement in the few times I have ridden x

It would be strange for a 7 year old to have done a 3* surely - considering the 7 year old champs in le lion are at 2*.

I would wonder why a 7 year old is now an "ex" eventer and lack of developed muscle would be a strange reason tbh!

It is (or was) close to being technically possible Shear H2O was born in 1990 and did four three stars in 1998 - he might have been seven when he did one of those if he was a late foal?

But agree a pretty exceptional horse to have run at 3* by seven, OP you enjoy him no matter what level he competed at.
Having one that's done lots before isn't ideal as you'll perminantly have people asking why you're only doing this class or that class when horse has done XYZ! Even though they couldn't ride one side of said horse.

Me too.. If he was "awarded best 6yo eventer" why is he now an ex-eventer at 7yo, even though you've said he's okay now?
Can you share his competition name please OP?

I found his competition record from the best 6 yr old eventer thing, and Im a bit useless at stuff like this. Didn't really know what I was looking at once I found it mind ;)

eta: If he is sound, I'd personally jump at the chance to have such a good horse to learn from :)

I found him too well I think I did. Hes not 3* he had 3 Intermediate runs and two at CIC 2* and got E in his last two runs which I guess is when the back problems kicked in. So he hasnt done that much really for a 7 year old! Unless of course I found the totally wrong horse!

Yes I found it too I think. If it is the one I think it is then it has a decent record and the rider has quite a few horses on the go, so maybe this one with the slight issue at age 7 is not worth his while trying to keep sound at the top level. Sounds like a great find for a loan.

Really sorry everyone I have misunderstood what the owner said, it was the same rider that rode him won that award with a different horse! Explains all of the confusion. Thank you all for helping me look into it
